Red Foxes Rally Late But Fall To St. John's

QUEENS, New York – The Marist women's soccer team rallied with a late flurry but were unable to overcome two second half goals from St. John's, Tuesday evening in non-conference action. The loss moves Marist to 1-1-0 overall and St. John's to 1-0-1 on the season.

Summary:
The first half was evenly played with both teams finishing the period with goal scoring chances. The closest chance went to the Red Storm as the ball trickled over the end line but was ruled no good as time had expired.

After Makala Foley's second big save of the game at 57', St. John's finally broke through and opened the scoring in the 60th minute. The Red Storm capitalized on a through ball from Lucy Whipp that found Christina Bellero at the left side of goal. In the 68th minute a bending shot from the Red Storm was stopped by Foley but the ensuing rebound was knocked home by Mariela Jacome giving St. John's a 2-0 lead.

In the 86th minute, Nicole Sasso headed one home off a free kick from Alexa Svensson to cut the Red Foxes deficit to just one goal. In the 88th minute Camille Bowen's rocket shot from outside the box hit the cross bar and nearly leveled the game.

Inside the Numbers:
  • St. John's led 7-4 shots at the half but held a decisive advantage in the second half, outshooting Marist, 13-5.
  • Foley made eight saves in net, two of which were of the 1v1 variety and kept the score tied at 0-0.
  • The Red Foxes lone goal, coming off the head of Sasso, marked the second consecutive game a freshman tallied their first career goal.
Quote:
"I think we played well. We had a big lapse in the second half when St. John's ramped up the pressure and we struggled to solve that but we showed a lot of character and played through the entire game getting a goal back and banging one off the crossbar to nearly tie it. Overall I think we can play at this level but we still have some things to work on," head coach Gene Smith.

Next Up:
The Red Foxes head home and take the pitch against the University of New Hampshire on Sunday, Aug. 27 at Tenney Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
