Two Second Half Goals Gives Men's Soccer 2-1 Win at Hartwick

ONEONTA, New York – For the second consecutive game, the Marist men's soccer team erased an early deficit with goals in the second half and earned the win . The Red Foxes beat the Hartwick Hawks 2-1 on Tuesday evening to remain unbeaten (2-0-0) in 2017.

Summary:

A penalty kick just 16 seconds into the game was converted by the Hawks and just like that, Hartwick was ahead 1-0. The Red Foxes earned a penalty kick in the 19th minute but the shot was saved to keep the score in favor of the home team. Both teams entered the half with the score the same but Marist answered just 14 seconds into the second half. Sophomore Samad Bounthong found junior co-captain Simon Lund-Jorgensen who dribbled to the edge of the box and curled a shot into the top right corner to even the score at 1-1. Just over 20 minutes later, freshman Allen Gavilanes found space down the right sideline, cut into the box, avoided a tackle and found junior Bruce Jeter all alone in the middle for the tap in and the 2-1 lead.

Inside the Numbers:
  • For the second consecutive game, Gavilanes' factored into Marist's scoring, assisting Jeter on the winner for his 3rd assist in just 2 collegiate games
  • The Red Foxes outshot Hartwick 19-9 and 10-4 in shots on goal and lead 10-4 in corner kicks
  • Marist had 10 of its 14 players that appeared in the game register at least one shot and 8 had at least one shot on goal
  • The two wins to open the season for the Red Foxes marks the first time the team has gone 2-0 to open the season since 2014.
Quote:

"It's always good to get a result on the road and it's good to get another comeback win. I was pleased with the effort minus the start. I like to take lessons from all our games and we have to start a little better. I thought we found our legs midway through the first half and we got the desired result...These last two games give us the belief that we can come back...We just had to keep playing the way we were playing and eventually we would get some chances. It definitely bodes well if we can continue to build on that character." -- head coach Matt Viggiano.

Up Next:
The Red Foxes continue their road trip on Saturday, when they head down to West Hartford, CT for a matchup with the Hartford Hawks at 7 PM. Hartford is currently 0-1-1 in 2017 and are coming off a 9-10-3 season last year, during which they made it to the America East Championship game but lost 1-0 to the Albany Great Danes.
