WASHINGTON, DC – The Marist football team defeated Georgetown of the Patriot League by a score of 14-12 on Saturday at Cooper Field. It marked the second time in program history the Red Foxes have won a road game against a Patriot League team.
The Red Foxes scored a touchdown in each of the first two quarters, and held off a late Hoyas' charge, as Georgetown scored a touchdown apiece in the third and fourth quarters.
Key Plays
- On their first drive, the Red Foxes drove deep into Georgetown territory, but were stopped on four straight plays inside the Georgetown five.
- On its next drive, Marist drove 40 yards in eight plays for the first score of the game, a five-yard touchdown pass from red-shirt junior quarterback Mike White to freshman wide receiver David Shannon III.
- With 47 seconds left in the first quarter, red-shirt sophomore cornerback Drew Daniel intercepted a pass and returned it to the Georgetown 20. Five plays later, red-shirt senior running back Marcellus Calhoun scored on a six-yard run, and Marist went up 14-0.
- With 7:48 to play in the third quarter, Georgetown got on the board on a two-yard touchdown run by Christian Bermudez. However, the PAT was blocked by red-shirt junior defensive end Eric Taylor.
- With 4:48 to play in the fourth quarter, Tim Barnes connected with Michael Dereus on a 44-yard touchdown to bring the Hoyas within two. However, the two-point conversion failed.
- Marist got two first downs on its ensuing drive, and forced Georgetown to use all three of its timeouts. The Hoyas got the ball back at their own 26 with 1:06 to play. On the final play of regulation, Dereus took a lateral and ran down the left sideline until he was tackled by Marist red-shirt junior free safety Wesley Beans to end the game.
Key Stats
- The Red Foxes held the Hoyas to 70 yards of total offense in the first half, and 262 in the game.
- White completed 29 of 47 passes for 236 yards and a touchdown. Junior wide receiver Juston Christian led the Red Foxes in receptions (seven) and receiving yards (88). Calhoun paced the Red Foxes with 44 rushing yards.
- Daniel's interception was the lone turnover of the game.
- Fifth-year senior linebacker Ruben Avalos III led Marist with eight tackles, including two for a loss of yardage.
- Red-shirt junior linebacker Willie Barrett had two sacks and two-and-half stops for loss among his six tackles.
Notes
- The Marist defense is allowing 1.8 yards per carry and 56.7 rushing yards allowed per game this season.
- White has now completed 451 passes in his career, tying him with Chuckie Looney for first place in program history.
- Marist's only other road win against a Patriot League foe in program history came at Georgetown in 2013. The Red Foxes are now 5-15 against the Hoyas all-time.
- Shannon's touchdown was the first of his career.
- Calhoun's touchdown was the 20th of his career, which moves into sole possession of fifth place all-time in program history.
Records
Marist is now 2-1 overall, while Georgetown is 1-1. It marks the first time since the 2005 season that the Red Foxes are above .500 after three games.
