Marist Football Falls To Jacksonville

White Sets Program Records For Completions, Yards

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist football team suffered its first Pioneer Football League loss of the season with a 44-37 defeat to the Jacksonville Dolphins on Saturday night at Tenney Stadium.

With the loss, the Red Foxes stand at 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the PFL. Jacksonville is 2-1 overall and 1-0 in league play.

Summary
After falling behind 22-9 at the end of the first half, Marist outscored the Dolphins 28-22 in the final two quarters to bring the game within six points with 1:35 left to go in the game. However, the comeback was cut short on an interception on the final drive to give Jacksonville the victory.

Key Plays
  • On the third play of the game, red-shirt junior quarterback Mike White threw a 12-yard pass to senior wide receiver Lawrence Dickens. This completion made White the all-time leader in completions in the programs history.
  • Jacksonville scored the game's first 10 points, but with 10:09 remaining in the half, red-shirt junior kicker Joe Giglio put Marist on the board with a 28-yard field goal.
  • Freshman Mekhai Johnson returned a kickoff 90 yards for the Red Foxes' first touchdown of the game. However, the extra point was blocked and returned by Jacksonville's Calvin Turner for a two-point conversion. This gave Jacksonville a 15-9 lead.
  • With 11:29 left in the third and Jacksonville leading 22-9, red-shirt junior and reigning PFL Defensive Player of the Week Willie Barrett recovered a fumble forced by red-shirt freshman safety Justice Seales at the Jacksonville 33. On the ensuing possession, White found Johnson for a two-yard touchdown pass, which gave the freshman his second score of the game.
  • At the 13:25 mark in the fourth quarter, White converted a fourth-and-nine, finding red-shirt sophomore Anthony Olivencia for a 23-yard touchdown pass. This brought Marist to within six at 29-23.
  • After Rylan Wells found Nic Duch for a 19-yard touchdown pass, White made it a one-score game again with a two-play, 24-second drive which culminated with a 50-yard touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Juston Christian.
  • With 3:53 left, White's fourth touchdown pass of the night, a 14-yarder to senior Lawrence Dickens, brought Marist to within seven at 44-37.
  • The Red Foxes held the Dolphins on the ensuing drive, and got the ball back at their 18 with 1:35 to go. Marist crossed midfield, but White was intercepted with 30 seconds left.

Key Stats
  • Fifth-year senior linebacker Ruben Avalos III led the Red Foxes with 12 tackles, while red-shirt junior safety Jordyn Jean-Felix added 10. Avalos and Jean-Felix combined on a tackle for loss on a fourth-and-one play from the Marist 5 late in the first half.
  • White completed 22 of 44 passes for 315 yards, with four touchdowns and four interceptions.
  • Dickens led the team in receptions (eight), while Christian led in receiving yards (124). Both Dickens (123) and Christian eclipsed 100 yards receiving.
  • Jacksonville outgained Marist, 516-357. Wells finished with five total touchdowns (three rushing, two passing).

Game Notes
  • With his 12-yard pass to Dickens in the first quarter, White passed former Marist quarterback Chuckie Looney as the all-time leader in completions with his 452nd.
  • Johnson's 90-yard kickoff touchdown return was the first for the Red Foxes since Dickens returned one 100-yards in a 49-14 win over Stetson on Nov. 7, 2015.
  • White has now thrown six touchdown passes this season. They have gone to six different receivers (Johnson, Olivencia, Christian, Dickens, red-shirt sophomore Isaiah Watson, and freshman David Shannon III).
  • White's 13-yard pass to Dickens late in the fourth quarter made him the all-time leader in passing yards in program history. He now has 6,505 career passing yards, breaking Looney's record of 6,497.
  • Marist 28 second-half points came in a span of 20 minutes, 14 seconds.
  • The last five Jacksonville-Marist games have been decided by a total of 25 points, with none being decided by more than seven.
  • The crowd of 4,077 was the second-largest in the 11 years of Tenney Stadium, and the largest since drawing 4,621 for its first football game against Duquesne on Oct. 6, 2007.
