Men's Soccer Falls In Final Minute To Army West Point

WEST POINT, New York – The Marist men's soccer team dropped a heartbreaker to Army West Point as the Black Knights scored the game-winning goal in the final minute Sunday evening at Malek Stadium at Clinton Field. The Red Foxes move to 3-4 with just one non-conference game remaining. Army West Point improves to 5-2 overall.

SUMMARY
In a game that Army West Point held possession for most of, the Black Knights capitalized on a set-piece with less than a minute remaining to win the game. A header in the box knocked off the left post and into the goal, securing the victory for the Black Knights. After entering into the locker room scoreless, the Red Foxes jumped ahead in the 50th minute but saw their lead evaporate just 14 minutes later and ensuing Black Knight pressure kept Marist on its heels.

  • 41' – The Red Foxes best chance in the first half came when Allen Gavilanes made a move outside the box and fired a low shot that was knocked away by the keeper.
  • Marist struck first in the second half when Blake Aronson slotted home a perfect cross from Gavilanes to take a 1-0 lead for his first career goal on his first career shot.
  • Army West Point would knot it up at 1-1 after an unassisted goal from Keenan O'Shea.

QUOTE OF THE GAME
"It's the sixth game of a six game road trip, I think we just didn't find the intensity tonight that you need to compete at the division I level. We did it in spurts and there were some parts of the game that we played well, getting out to a one goal lead off a very nice goal but that was the probably the only 25 minutes we played really well. They're a good team, a very organized team and hardworking team and we needed to match that tonight and we didn't." – Head coach Matt Viggiano.

UP NEXT
Marist will return home for its first game at Tenney Stadium since the season opening 3-2 win vs Albany on Aug. 25th, as the Red Foxes host the St. Bonaventure Bonnies on Sunday, Sept. 24th at 1 p.m.
