POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The reigning Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Player of the Year,
Javier Restrepo, has been chosen and will head to the 2017 Oracle/ITA Masters at the Malibu Racquet Club in Malibu, California from September 21-24.
The tournament hosts 32 elite men's and women's singles players, along with 32 mixed doubles teams competing for championships. This is the third year of existence for the Oracle/ITA Master's, after the tournaments inception in the 2015-16 season.
"This is a great opportunity for me and the first time Marist gets to go to the Oracle Masters," Restrepo said. "Playing against players of the year from all of the conferences is a good test for me and I'm looking forward to competing with the best and making a great week out of it."
Restrepo will compete in the singles side of the tournament along with competing with a partner to be named at a later date in mixed doubles. Draws will be announced later this week.
Each collegiate conference gets one player into the singles draw per gender. The player that is chosen is the returning conference player of the year. If the POY was a senior and graduated, then the highest returning player in the ITA Final National Rankings or highest returning Universal Tennis Rating (UTR) rated player would be chosen.
"This is an excellent way to promote college tennis throughout the United States, Javy will have a chance to play against many players that are ranked in the top 50 in the ITA," said head coach Tim Smith. "It's also terrific that the Oracle sees the importance of giving each player at least two matches and makes it fun by including a random mixed doubles match."
Restrepo was a unanimous MAAC Men's Tennis Player of the Year selection. Restrepo was also a unanimous All-MAAC selection at #1 singles. At the #1 spot, the junior recorded a 13-4 overall record and was a 5-1 mark in conference play. Restrepo, along with doubles partner,
Gianlucca Massa, teamed up to go 10-5 overall at #2 doubles and 5-1 in MAAC play. The duo was named to the All-MAAC Second Team at #2 doubles.
