Bucknell Defeats Marist In Season Opener

Calhoun Scores 19th Career Touchdown For Red Foxes

LEWISBURG, Pennsylvania – The Marist football team suffered a 45-6 loss at Bucknell in its season opener at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium on Saturday. The Bison jumped out to a 28-0 lead in the first quarter, and scored the game's first 35 points.
 
Key Plays
  • Bucknell jumped out to a 21-0 lead on the strength of two key Marist turnovers. The first turnover was an interception by the Bison's Colin Jonov at the Bucknell 36, which Jonov returned the interception 64 yards for the touchdown. The Bison upped the score to 15-0 two possessions later and then on the ensuing possession recovered a strip sack in the end zone for a three-touchdown lead.
  • The Bison went on to a 35-0 lead before a half-ending 16-play, 97-yard Marist drive that ended in a touchdown by Marcellus Calhoun. During the possession, Mike White and Juston Christian hooked up for three big plays to keep the drive alive.
  • Bucknell extended its lead in the second half with a third-quarter touchdown and fourth-quarter field goal.

  • Of Marist's 130 passing yards, 62 went to Christian.
  • Bucknell went 9-for-17 on third-down conversions, while Marist was 3-for-16.
  • The Red Foxes held the Bison to 56 rushing yards on 39 attempts.

  • Calhoun's touchdown was the 19th of his career, which ties Armani Martin for fifth place in program history.
  • This is the 13th straight year Marist has faced Bucknell, including the third straight season opener. The Red Foxes are now 1-12 against the Bison all-time.
  • In its 40 years as a varsity program, Marist is 16-24 in season openers.

Marist plays its home opener on Saturday, Sept. 9, when the Red Foxes host Stetson at 1 p.m. It will also be the Red Foxes' Pioneer Football League opener. Marist is 3-1 against Stetson all-time.
