POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – In the final match of the 2017 Volley In The Valley/Rose Hill Classic, the Marist volleyball team (3-2) fell to Cleveland State (3-3) in four sets (23-25, 25-18, 25-12, 25-18).
Turning Points:
Marist broke a 3-3 tie by ripping off six straight points in the opening set. Freshman
Sarah Austin capped the run with a service ace. The Vikings came within a point for more times and got in front by two at 17-15. The Red Foxes got their two-point edge when they needed it however, as a kill from senior
Kelsey Ediger sealed the first set.
Five of the first six points in the second set went Cleveland State's way in the second stanza. Marist cut the lead to 21-18 on a kill from sophomore
Megan Fergus and forced a Vikings' timeout, but Cleveland State stormed back with a 4-0 run to tie the match. The Vikings led for the final two frames, managing a 5-0 run with a pair of Marist timeouts sprinkled in during the final set.
Inside the Numbers:
- Ediger slammed nine kills and dove for six digs.
- Senior Ashton Korona had eight total blocks, including two solo, and the Red Foxes owned a 12-9 advantage in total blocks for the match.
- Cleveland State senior Alexis Middlebrooks registered match highs of 18 kills and two service aces.
- Marist has won the first set in each of its five matches this season.
- Korona and junior Taylor van der Biezen were named to the All-Tournament Team. They tallied 14 kills and 13 blocks and 82 assists and 27 digs, respectively, in the two matches this weekend.

Marist will face Hudson Valley rival Army West Point in its only non-tournament matchup in out of conference play this season. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. Sept. 5 in West Point, New York.
