Marist Football Topples Davidson, 31-9

Balanced Attack Propels Red Foxes To Road Victory

DAVIDSON, North Carolina – The Marist football team defeated Pioneer Football League for Davidson by a score of 31-9 on Saturday.
 
With the win, the Red Foxes improved to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in PFL play. The Wildcats are now 2-2 overall, and 0-1 in the PFL.
 
Key Plays
  • After a scoreless first quarter, Davidson struck first on a 30-yard field goal by Trevor Smith with 11:30 left in the second period.
  • The Red Foxes took the lead on a two-yard touchdown run by red-shirt junior quarterback Mike White, which capped a 12-play, 75-yard drive.
  • On Davidson's next drive, freshman safety Jeremiah Gholston intercepted a pass at his own 41, and weaved his way through traffic for a 59-yard touchdown.
  • Davidson cut its deficit to one score on a 39-yard field goal by Smith with 2:49 left in the first half. Marist took the 14-6 lead to the locker room.
  • Marist punted on its first drive of the second half, but senior long snapper Nick Mecca recovered a fumble at the Davidson 26. Three plays later, White connected with red-shirt sophomore Anthony Olivencia on a four-yard score with 12:29 left in the third quarter.
  • Smith's third field goal of the game cut Marist's lead to 21-9 with 6:17 left in the third quarter.
  • The Red Foxes closed out the scoring with 10 points in the fourth quarter. Red-shirt junior Joe Giglio hit a 35-yard field goal to make the score 24-9. After a fumble recovery by red-shirt freshman cornerback Ryan Webb, fifth-year senior running back Marcellus Calhoun had a 32-yard touchdown run two plays later.
 
Key Stats
  • Marist was plus-3 in turnover differential. The Red Foxes turned two fumbles and an interception into 21 points, and did not commit any turnovers themselves.
  • White threw for 215 yards and ran for 44. He had a touchdown rushing and passing.
  • Calhoun ran for 87 yards on 13 carries. It was the highest single-game rushing total by a Red Fox this season.
  • Senior wide receiver Lawrence Dickens and junior wide receiver Juston Christian tied for the team high with six receptions. Dickens had a team-best 58 receiving yards.
  • Red-shirt junior safety Jordyn Jean-Felix had a team-high seven tackles and a forced fumble.
  • Marist registered eight tackles for loss. Red-shirt junior defensive end Eric Taylor had two, and red-shirt sophomore defensive end Peter Delatour had a sack.
 
Notes
  • Marist is now 10-0 all-time in the state of North Carolina, with six wins at Davidson and four victories at Campbell.
  • Gholston's pick-six was the Red Foxes' second defensive touchdown of the season, following Ruben Avalos III's fumble return for a score against Stetson. Marist's last interception return for a touchdown was a 16-yard play by Mike Marston at Stetson last season.
  • Calhoun's touchdown run was his longest run from scrimmage this season.
  • Marist is now 9-1 against Davidson all-time. The Red Foxes have won seven straight in the series. Their last three victories have come by scores of 31-10, 31-10, and 31-9.
