Strong Hitting Leads To Marist Shutout Of Manhattan

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – Playing its first match in McCann Arena in nearly one month, the Marist volleyball team came home and swept Manhattan, 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-21), on Sept. 30.

The Red Foxes improved to 6-9 overall and 3-1 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play while the Jaspers dropped to 0-16, including 0-4 in conference competition.

Turning Points:
Marist came out of the gate strong and went ahead 6-1 with the help of multiple hitters before the Jaspers ripped off a 7-1 run to take their first lead of the day. With the set tied at 10, sophomore Nikki DeSerpa slammed a couple kills and the Red Foxes took five of the next six points to force a Manhattan timeout. Marist held the edge from that moment on.

Manhattan started the second stanza hot, but Marist quickly struck back after some unforced errors by Manhattan. The frame was tied 13 times, including once at 14 points apiece with a stretch of thee Jaspers' points. A kill from senior Kelsey Ediger made it 21 all. Ediger's slam began a 5-1 outburst for Marist, which padded its lead to 2-0.

The Red Foxes never trailed in the third set. Manhattan threatened to sneak ahead by cutting the lead to 10-9, but five straight Red Foxes points helped them secure the victory. Ā

Inside the Numbers:
- DeSerpa and Ediger combined for 24 of Marist's 43 kills on the day. Together they also swiped three service aces and dove for 12 digs.
- Junior Lauren Waide slammed three of her five kills in the third set and had three digs on the day.
- Jaspers junior Zoe Lindsey led her team in assists with 27 and had seven digs and a service ace.
- Manhattan owned a 10-5 edge in total blocks with the help of six each from freshman Erin Hoener and junior Casey Monroe.
- Marist earned its fourth shutout of the year and third in MAAC play this season. All of the Red Foxes conference wins have ended by scores of 3-0 so far.

Up Next:
Marist will kick off October by hosting the Iona Gaels at 1 p.m. Oct. 1. The Red Foxes will welcome fraternities and sororities from around campus on Greek Day. The first 100 fans in attendance will receive a free pair of Marist sunglasses.
