WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Marist men's soccer team picked up its first shutout win of the season, defeating the American Eagles 3-0 on Thursday afternoon.
SUMMARY:
The Red Foxes opened the scoring in the 19
th minute when junior
Juan Parada found freshman
Allen Gavilanes on the right side. Gavilanes noticed the goalie was far out of the goal and lofted a great shot over his head and into the far left corner for the 1-0 lead. Just over five minutes later, a scrum in the box produced a loose ball and sophomore
Samad Bounthong poked it home for the 2-0 and his first goal of 2017. The Eagles put the pressure on the Marist defense in the second half, forcing senior
Mark Rajovic to make several key saves. With just under 20 minutes left, sophomore
David Nkansah-Siriboe carried the ball on the left side and found Parada on the wing, who's cross found Gavilanes in front who flicked it on to senior
Brendan Gallivan in front for the tap in, his first goal of the season and three goal lead.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- American outshot the Red Foxes 16-12 and 9-6 in shots on goal
- This was the first time Marist scored first in the game this season
- Rajovic made a season high 9 saves en route to his program leading 16th career shutout
- Gavilanes recorded his second career multi point game (1g 1a) in just his fourth career game
QUOTE:
"It was a good result. I thought we played well in the first half, not so well in the second. It's the first time we scored first in the game this year but I think there was a natural little dip at 2-0. We're still in the process of learning how to win which is part of the process being not the oldest group but they kept a clean sheet so I'm happy about that. It was a tough place to play, a good program with a good pedigree so I'm happy with the result." -- head coach Matt Viggiano.
UP NEXT:
The Red Foxes return to action and continue their road trip on Sunday, Sept 10th as they travel to Kingston, RI for a match against the Rhode Island Rams. The Rams stand at 1-2 going into their match vs Bryant on Thursday night.
