Marist Men’s Basketball Falls At Siena, 68-65

Red Foxes Shoot 11-For-18 From Three-Point Range

ALBANY, New York – The Marist men's basketball team suffered a 68-65 loss to Siena in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game at the Times Union Center on Thursday night.
 
Summary
  • A pair of three-pointers by freshman forward Lasse Gummerus led to a 9-9 tie at the game's first media timeout, which came at the 14:59 mark.
  • Siena answered with a 7-0 run coming out of the media timeout. The Saints ran their lead to as much as nine, but a three-pointer by junior guard David Knudsen at the 7:56 mark gave Marist back the lead at 20-19.
  • Marist led by as much as six in the first 20 minutes, and took a 40-34 lead to the locker room. The Red Foxes shot 9-for-13 (.692) from three-point range in the first half.
  • Siena took the lead back as it scored the first eight points of the second half. Marist had four turnovers in the first 2:12 of the second half.
  • With 6:35 to play, a jumper by Khalil Richard gave Siena its largest lead of the game at 60-49.
  • A three-point play by freshman guard Austin Williams brought Marist to within three at 66-63 with 1:17 remaining.
  • With under 20 seconds to play and the score still at 66-63, Marist had only three team fouls. The Red Foxes quickly gave three fouls, but with Marist at six fouls, Siena broke the pressure and Kadeem Smithen converted a layup to seal the victory.

  • Marist shot 11-for-18 (.611) from three-point range. After going 9-for-13 in the first half, the Red Foxes were 2-for-5 in the final 20 minutes.
  • Knudsen led the Red Foxes with 17 points, followed by junior forward Ryan Funk with 13.
  • Jordan Horn paced four Siena double-digit scorers with 15 points.
  • Siena held a 32-25 edge in rebounds.

Notes
  • Junior guard Brian Parker (right ankle) did not dress. It was the first game he missed this season. In his place, Williams made his first career start. Tobias Sjoberg is now the only Red Fox to start all of the team's games this season.
  • Freshman guard Ryan Carmello, a native of nearby Latham, hit a baseline jumper at the buzzer for his first collegiate points.
  • Sjoberg had a career-high five assists.
  • Senior center Connor McClenaghan hit a three-pointer in his only attempt. He has hit his last four three-point attempts over his last three games.
  • This was the 82nd all-time meeting between Marist and Siena. The Saints now lead the series, 55-27, and have won five in a row at the Times Union Center.

"It was a valiant effort, but this is kind of our story," head coach Mike Maker said. "I don't believe in moral victories, but I'm really proud of our team for how hard we fought without Brian (Parker). We started the second half very poorly."
 
Records
Marist is now 4-14 overall and 2-4 in the MAAC. Siena is 6-14 overall and 2-5 in the MAAC.

Marist heads back to the road on Saturday, when the Red Foxes travel to Rider. It will be the first meeting between the Red Foxes and Broncs this season. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
