Marist Defeats Boston University In Home Opener

Red Foxes Start 2-0 For First Time In 10 Years

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist women's basketball team won its 2018-19 home opener on Friday evening, as the Red Foxes defeated the Boston University Terriers, 68-57. The Red Foxes are now 2-0 on the season, while the Terriers dropped to 1-2.
 

GAME SUMMARY
  • The Red Foxes opened the first quarter on a 9-3 scoring run, limiting the Terriers to just one field goal in the first five minutes of the game. Marist preserved that lead and would head into the second quarter with a 15-9 advantage.
  • Senior guard Maura Fitzpatrick caught fire in the second quarter, scooping up two offensive rebounds resulting in two layups in the first 2:19 of the second quarter. This would extend the Red Foxes lead to 21-11.
  • Three straight threes by the Terriers, including two from Lauren Spearman, brought Boston University to within three points with under a minute remaining in the first half. However, a corner three by junior guard Rebekah Hand with just 13 seconds remaining gave Marist a 37-31 lead heading into the locker room.
  • Boston University held the Marist to just two points in the first five minutes of the third quarter and went on a 6-2 run to pull within two points. However, a three by red-shirt junior guard Grace Vander Weide sparked the Red Foxes' offense, as they outscored the Terriers 12-8 the rest of the quarter. Marist held a 51-45 lead heading into the fourth.
  • After trading a few baskets to begin the fourth quarter, both teams went cold from the field. Both the Terriers and Red Foxes only scored eight points each in the first nine minutes of the quarter. Marist led 59-53 heading into the final minute of play.
  • In the final minute, Rebekah Hand and red-shirt junior forward Alana Gilmer combined to go 9-for-10 from the free throw line to help ice the victory.
 
KEY STATS
  • Boston University's Nia Irving led all scorers with 16 points in the game.
  • Rebekah Hand led the Red Foxes with 15 points. Senior forward Lovisa Henningsdottir (13) and Gilmer (12) also had double-digit points.
  • 10 Red Foxes saw the floor in today's victory, and each of them had at least one point.
  • The Terriers turned the ball over 20 times, while Marist did so just 13 times.
  • The Red Foxes got 32 points from there bench, while Boston University had only four bench points.
  • The Terriers shot slightly better from the field, shooting .380 compared to Marist's .375.
  • After shooting 6-for-14 from three in the first half, BU was 0-for-10 from beyond the arc in the second half.
GAME NOTES
  • This is Marist's first 2-0 start since the 2008-09 season, which the Red Foxes started 3-0.
  • Marist is now 10-5 all-time against Boston University.
  • This is the Red Foxes' sixth consecutive victory over the Terriers.
  • Prior to tonight's victory, the Red Foxes had dropped their last five home openers.

"Every win is a good win," head coach Brian Giorgis said. "To win our home opener, I feel great for our kids. Credit to BU, they were very game. (Head coach) Marisa Moseley had them prepared, and she does a nice job with them. It obviously is a game that shows us what we need to work on."
