POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – The men's lacrosse team dropped their home opener against Colgate 18-12 at Tenney Stadium.
Summary
Gannon Morrison gave the Red Foxes a 2-0 lead halfway through the first quarter with his second goal coming from a man-up situation. But the Raider's offense dominated the Red Foxes the rest of the quarter, going on a 4-0 run to finish the first quarter. The defense struggle to regain possession, leading Marist to only take four shots in the quarter.
Chris Schlappich opened the second quarter with a goal to come within one of Colgate. But the Raiders offense continued to roll and went on an 8-2 scoring run to bring the score to 12-5 with 6:54 left in the third quarter. Marist's offense would not give up and found the back of the net four more times that quarter to go into the fourth quarter down 14-9.
Colgate opened the fourth quarter scoring two goals within a little over a minute. Schlappich and Morrison combined for a goal and
Michael Smith scored his second goal of the game to bring the deficit back to five points with 12:16 left in the game. Marist won the ensuing faceoff but could not capitalize on it, giving possession back to Colgate. The Raiders maintained possession for the majority of the game, making it difficult for the Red Foxes' offense to find scoring opportunities.
