Marist Falls At Fairfield, 83-79

Five Red Foxes Score in Double Digits

BRIDGEPORT, Connecticut – The Marist men's basketball team suffered an 83-79 defeat to Fairfield in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game at Webster Bank Arena on Thursday night.
 
Summary
  • Seven consecutive points from junior forward Ryan Funk gave Marist an 11-7 lead at the first media timeout.
  • A 9-2 run in a span of less than two-and-a-half minutes late in the first half gave Fairfield its largest lead of the first half at 35-27.
  • The Stags led 38-32 after the first 20 minutes.
  • Fairfield's lead reached as large as 12, which came on a three-pointer by Tyler Nelson with 6:32 remaining in the second half.
  • The Stags led 77-68 with one minute to play, and still were up by six after two free throws by Nelson with 16 seconds to go. Junior guard Brian Parker then drove for a layup, and freshman forward Lasse Gummerus stole the ensuing inbounds pass and fed Parker for another layup, which brought Marist to within 81-79 with 7.4 seconds remaining. The Red Foxes fouled Ferron Flavors Jr. with 5.4 to play, and he drained both free throws to close out the scoring.
 
Key Stats
  • Five Red Foxes scored in double digits, led by Parker with 18 points. Funk had 15, freshman guard Austin Williams scored 12, and both Gummerus and sophomore center Tobias Sjoberg finished with 11.
  • Marist shot 28-for-58 (.483) from the field, 7-for-23 (.304) from three-point range, and 16-for-20 from the free-throw line. The Red Foxes were 19-for-34 (.559) from the field but just 5-for-8 (.625) from the line in the final 20 minutes.
  • Marist had two assists and 10 turnovers in the first half. The Red Foxes had nine assists and three turnovers in the second half.
  • Nelson led all scorers with 29.
  • Flavors Jr. had a double-double with 16 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
  • Fairfield finished with 17 assists against just eight turnovers.
 
Notes
  • Gummerus' 11 points were a career high, and his seven rebounds tied a career high.
  • Sjoberg has now scored in double digits in three straight games for the first time in his career.
  • Parker now has 1,305 career points, and moved past Bill DeWinne into 12th place on the program's all-time scoring list.
  • Tonight marked Mike Maker's 300th game as a collegiate men's head coach. His career record is 174-126.
