Men's Lacrosse Edged by UMBC

The Retrievers Won a Defensive Matchup Between the Two Teams

BALTIMORE, MD - UMBC came out on top of a defensive battle between the Red Foxes and Retrievers 7-4 at UMBC Stadium Saturday evening.

SUMMARY
Chris Schlappich scored to put the Red Foxes on the board first. The Retrievers scored five unanswered goals to take a 5-1 lead with 11:19 left in the second quarter. Jason Intermesoli beat the goalie to cut UMBC's lead to three but the Retrievers snuck a goal in to take a 6-2 lead into halftime.

The Red Fox defense buckled down in the second half, holding UMBC scoreless in the third quarter. Gannon Morrison scored twice in the fourth quarter to cut the retriever's lead down to two goals. Marist had a man up opportunity to start the fourth quarter to make it a one goal game, but the Red Foxes could not capitalize. UMBC scored in transition with 7:07 left in the game and milked the clock when its team had possession to finish out the game.

STATS
  • Morrison led the Red Foxes with three points from two goals and one assist.
  • Jack Andrews scored a game high three goals from UMBC.
  • The Red Foxes played good man down defense, holding the Retrievers to 0-3 on extra man opportunities.
  • Marist had five turnovers in the first quarter but only four over the last three quarters.
GAME NOTES
  • Gannon Morrison moves into a tie for ninth all time in assists with 64 career assists.

Marist ends its road stretch at Detroit Mercy on March 17th where they will also open up MAAC play.
