Marist Softball Splits Doubleheader At Iona

Red Foxes Take First Game, Drop Second In 11 Innings

NEW ROCHELLE, New York – The Marist softball team split a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader at Iona on Sunday. The Red Foxes prevailed in game one by a score of 9-2, but were defeated by a score of 2-1 in 11 innings in the second game.
 
Game One – Marist 9, Iona 2
Summary
  • Iona scored the game's first run in the bottom of the first on an RBI groundout by Kimmie Chiapparelli.
  • The Red Foxes took the lead with a three-run third. Marist loaded the bases on two walks and an error, and freshman Caroline Baratta drove in senior Brittany Colombo and freshman Hunter Hand with a double into the right field corner. Senior Miranda Perez followed with a groundout, on which junior Casey Page broke from third and scored.
  • In the bottom of the third, an RBI double by Jasmine Temple cut Marist's lead to 3-2.
  • The Red Foxes scored four runs in the fifth, all with two outs. Perez's two-out single up the middle scored Hand. After red-shirt sophomore Claire Oberdorf beat out an infield single, sophomore Ali Milam's two-run single brought home Perez and Oberdorf. Senior Kourtney Paul then skied an infield pop-up that got lost in the sun, and Milam scored from second, which extended Marist's lead to 7-2.
  • Baratta's RBI single on a sinking infield liner in the sixth brought home Hand, and made it 8-2.
  • An RBI single by Colombo in the seventh, which brought home Paul, closed out the scoring.
 
Key Stats
  • Junior Megan Beiermeister (10-6) struck out seven and walked just two. She threw 69 of her 111 pitches for strikes.
  • Baratta finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Paul (2-for-4, RBI, run) also had a multi-hit game.
  • Perez and Milam each drove in two runs.
  • Hand scored three times.
  • The Red Foxes outhit the Gaels, 9-5.
  • Marist scored four runs with two outs.
  • Jessica Harkness (2-4) took the loss for Iona.
 
Game Two – Iona 2, Marist 1 (11 innings)
Summary
  • Despite both teams loading the bases in the first, neither scored.
  • Baratta's sacrifice fly in the second brought home Colombo with the game's first run.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, Chiapparelli's RBI double tied the score at one apiece.
  • The score remained tied at one until the bottom of the 11th, when Chiapparelli's ground ball single up the middle scored Tori Danner from second to end the game.
 
Key Stats
  • Marist outhit Iona, 8-4, but left 15 runners on base.
  • Baratta, Paul, and Colombo had two hits apiece for the Red Foxes.
  • Junior Kallen Leeseberg started for the Red Foxes, and struck out seven in 5.1. Junior Brooke Peterson (3-3) took the loss, but allowed just one hit and one run in five innings of relief.
  • Samantha Bender (1-7) earned the win with seven scoreless innings of relief.
 
Notes
  • Beiermeister has now won at least 10 games in all three seasons at Marist. She improved her career record to 33-13.
  • Hand's three runs scored in game one were a career high.
  • Game two was Marist's second extra-inning game of the year. The Red Foxes defeated Houston Baptist in nine innings on March 14.
  • The 11-inning game was Marist's longest since going 12 innings at Quinnipiac on April 19, 2015.
 
Records
Marist is now 19-23 overall and 6-4 in the MAAC. Iona is 17-21 overall and 9-5 in the MAAC.
