POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist baseball team returns to McCann Field and Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play, as they host the Fairfield Stags in a three game series this weekend.
The Red Foxes and Stags will play a nine and seven inning doubleheader on Saturday (Noon) and a single nine inning game on Sunday (Noon).
Marist stands at 19-15 (8-4 MAAC) and is in fourth place, two games behind first place Quinnipiac (10-2) and one game behind second place Manhattan (9-3).
LAST TIME OUT:
The Red Foxes picked up their first win in the Hudson Valley Baseball Classic since 2015 on Wednesday, defeating the Army West Point Black Knights 15-7 at Dutchess Stadium on Thursday evening.
Marist erased a 7-1 deficit in the fourth and fifth inning and scoring 15 unanswered runs to extend their 2018 non-conference win streak to five games.
SUMMARY:
In the first inning, Army West Point got off to a fast start. Jon Rosoff doubled down the left field line to drive in Josh White. John McKenna then grounded out to shortstop, but Anthony Giachin came in to score. Matt Hudgins followed with a long homer to right field to cap the four-run first inning.
The Red Foxes got on the board in the bottom of the second.
Randy Taveras led off with a double down the left field line, followed by a
Chris Tracz double to left that allowed Taveras to advance to third.
Reece Armitage then grounded out to first, allowing Taveras to score.
The Black Knights added three runs in the top of the third. Giachin led off with a walk and advanced to third on a wild pitch. He scored on a single by McKenna. After a walk to Matt Hudgins, Trey Martin doubled to score both runners. Army West Point led 7-1.
Marist scored five runs in the third.

Reece Armitage,
Jordan Roper, and
Andrew Rouse all had RBI hits that trimmed the deficit to 7-6.
The Red Foxes would add four more in the fourth. With the bases loaded, Tracz got an RBI hit-by-pitch that tied the game, Armitage had an RBI walk to take the lead, Roper had an RBI groundout to short, and Pat Lightner singled to give the Red Foxes a 10-7 lead.
Marist would add five more in the eighth. Armitage and Rouse had back-to-back RBI doubles, Rouse came in to score on a wild pitch, and Taveras singled to drive in
Tyler Kapuscinski.
SEASON'S BEST:
The Red Foxes saw several team season highs vs Army West Point. As a team, Marist had a 2018 best 20 hits, 15 runs scored, 14 RBI and 8 doubles, which was also a MAAC season high as well.
LOVING THAT HOME COOKIN:
Marist is currently 9-1 at McCann Field and has won nine straight games, after losing its home opener vs Monmouth 13-6 on March 24. The Red Foxes have four walk off hits in those nine wins, including one in their last series vs Binghamton on April 18 when sophomore
Patrick Lightner laced a bases loaded RBI single in extra innings to secure a 2-1 Marist walk off win in Game 1 of the doubleheader.
MAAC RANKINGS:
The Red Foxes are ranked first in the MAAC with 24 home runs, are second in the conference with 166 walks, are third in the MAAC with 38 stolen bases, are fourth in the conference with a .271 batting average and are tied for fifth in the MAAC with 64 doubles.
Individually:
- Senior Mike Coss is second with a conference low 27 hits and 10 earned runs allowed, is third with a 2.62 ERA, five saves, a .218 opponent batting average against and 19 appearances and is tied for fourth with five wins.
- Junior Anthony Lazar is fourth with a .575 slugging percentage, is sixth with a .440 on base percentage and is tied for ninth with a .333 average.
- Redshirt senior Greg Kocinski is tied for tied for fifth with six home runs, is tied for seventh with 22 walks and is eighth with a .520 slugging percentage.
- Rouse is fifth with a .440 on base percentage, is tied for fifth with eight stolen bases and is tied for seventh with 22 walks
- Redshirt junior Tony Romanelli is fifth with a .237 opponent batting average against and is ninth with 45 strikeouts
- Senior Charlie Jerla is tied for second with 10 starts
- Taveras is tied for third with nine stolen bases
- Kapuscinski is second with a .379 average.
SCOUTING THE STAGS:
Fairfield enters the weekend at 17-21 (7-8 MAAC) and are coming off a 19-10 win vs Stony Brook on Thursday.
Senior Drew Arciuolo is first on the team with 49 hits, 13 doubles, a .424 on base percentage, is tied for first with five stolen bases, is second with a .329 average and 27 runs scored, is third with a .450 slugging percentage and is fifth with 16 RBI.
Junior John Signore and sophomores Josh Arnold and Austin Pope got the starts for the Stags in their last MAAC series.
Signore is 5-2 with a 2.67 ERA and in 57.1 innings pitched, has given up 23 runs (17 earned) on 55 hits with 11 walks, 64 strikeouts and .250 opponent batting average against.
Arnold is 2-2 with a 3.61 ERA and in 42.1 innings pitched, has given up 20 runs (17 earned) on 38 hits with 23 walks, 39 strikeouts and a .250 opponent batting average against.
Pope is 1-2 with a 2.79 ERA and in 29 innings pitched, has given up 10 runs (nine earned) on 23 hits with 12 walks, 26 strikeouts and a .221 opponent batting average against.
