Softball Drops Two To Manhattan

Red Foxes Fall By Scores Of 4-1, 1-0

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist softball team was swept in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader against Manhattan on Saturday at Gartland Field. The Red Foxes fell 4-1 in game one, and 1-0 in game two.
 
Game One – Manhattan 4, Marist 1
Summary
  • Manhattan got out to a strong start in the first inning scoring two runs. Briana Matazinsky scored the game's first run on an error, and Adriana Gambino drove in the game's second run on a single through the left side to bring in Bella Chiorazzi.
  • Matazinsky held the Red Foxes scoreless for the first three innings, but in the bottom of the fourth, the Red Foxes answered as sophomore Ali Milam led off with a solo shot to dead center.
  • In the top of the fifth inning, Lauren Pitney was hit by a pitch and Matazinsky walked. Two batters later, Shannon Puthe hit a two-run single to bring the Manhattan lead up to 4 -1.
 
Key Stats
  • Milam's homer was her team-leading seventh of the season.
  • Matazinsky (8-9) struck out four and held the Red Foxes to three hits in a complete game.
  • Junior Megan Beiermeister (10-8), who went the first 5.1, took the loss. Freshman Nicole Teague pitched a scoreless 1.2 innings of relief.
 
Game Two – Manhattan 1, Marist 0
Summary
  • Senior Brittany Colombo got things started with a single in the first for the Red Foxes. However, after red-shirt sophomore Claire Oberdorf reached on a fielder's choice, she would remain stranded on second for the remainder of the inning. Colombo's single would be the Red Foxes only hit of the game.
  • Junior Kallen Leeseberg had a no-hitter going for the Red Foxes through 4.1 innings. Adriana Gambino would break the stalemate with a single but would end up stranded on base.
  • No runs would be scored until the the top of the seventh inning. A leadoff walk put Shannon Puthe on base. After stealing second and advancing to third on a wild pitch, Emma Hesse drove her in with a pinch-hit RBI single for the Jaspers first and only run of the game.
  • The Red Foxes put runners on second and third with two outs in the seventh, but were unable to score.
 
Key Stats
  • Manahttan's Nicole Williams (7-9) recorded a one-hitter with five strikeouts.
  • Kallen Leeseberg (4-9) took the loss, but went 6.2 innings with four strikeouts and just two hits allowed.
 
Records
Marist is 19-27 overall and 6-8 in the MAAC. Manhattan is 20-23 overall and 4-10 in the MAAC.
