Softball Sweeps Saint Peter’s On Senior Day

Colombo, Kelliher, Paul, Perez Honored Prior To Games

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist softball team swept a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader against Saint Peter's on Sunday, April 29. The Red Foxes defeated Saint Peter's 9-1 (six innings) in game one and then went on to win game two, 9-0 (five innings).  
 
Marist softball celebrated Senior Day, and honored Brittany Colombo, Gabrielle Kelliher, Kourtney Paul, and Miranda Perez in a pre-game ceremony.

Summary
  • The Red Foxes scored first in the bottom of the second inning when freshman Hunter Hand came home on an error by Saint Peter's.
  • Marist tacked on two more runs in the second as junior Brandi Coon also came in to score on an error, and junior Casey Page drove in a run with an RBI single.
  • Coon extended the Red Foxes' lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the third inning with an RBI double.
  • After a leadoff single by Page to begin the bottom of the fourth inning, freshman Caroline Baratta blasted the first pitch she saw over the left field wall for a two-run homer.
  • The Peacocks got on the board in the top of the fifth inning after an RBI double by Barbara Verrastro.
  • Saint Peter's loaded the bases in the top of the sixth, but junior Megan Beiermeister preserved Marist's 6-1 lead after she came in to the game in relief of junior Brooke Peterson.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, after an RBI hit by pitch by red-shirt sophomore Claire Oberdorf, two consecutive runs came in to score on wild pitches, giving Marist a 9-1 mercy-rule victory.

Summary
  • The Red Foxes struck first again, this time in the first inning on an RBI single by sophomore Ali Milam.
  • Later in the inning, Marist extended its lead to 3-0 after RBI singles by Coon and Perez.
  • The Red Foxes loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the second, and Milam blasted her first career grand slam, giving Marist a 7-0 lead.
  • Paul made it back-to-back homers after she blasted a solo homer over the left field fence just three pitches later.
  • The Red Foxes added some insurance in the bottom of the fourth after Page drove in a run on an infield single.
  • Freshman Nicole Teague retired the Peacocks in order in the top of the fifth, completing the shutout.

Marist is now 21-27 on the season and 8-8 in the MAAC, while the Peacocks move to 5-37 overall and 0-16 in conference play.
