Marist Softball Splits With Niagara

Beiermeister Tosses Shutout In Game One Triumph

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist softball team split its first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader of the season against Niagara on Saturday. The Red Foxes defeated Niagara 7-0 in game one but lost game two 6-5.

Summary
  • The Red Foxes struck first in the bottom of the second inning when senior Brittany Colombo came through with a two-run single with the bases loaded and two outs.
  • Junior Megan Beiermeister's no-hitter was broken up after 3.2 innings on a double from Jennifer Timm, putting runners on second and third. However, Beiermeister worked out of the jam unscathed.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, senior Miranda Perez scored on a wild pitch and senior Gabrielle Kelliher plated a run with an RBI double, extending Marist's lead to 4-0.
  • The Red Foxes continued to rally in the sixth, eventually taking a 7-0 lead heading into the final frame. Junior Brandi Coon drove in two runs with a two-run triple, while Colombo drove in the other run with an RBI single.
  • Beiermeister retired the side in order in the top of the seventh, closing the door on her two-hitter.

  • Beiermeister allowed just two hits and struck out five batters in the complete game shutout.

  • The Purple Eagles began game two with a bang, as Kelsey Harrigan and Kendall Watkins blasted back-to-back homers to lead off the game, giving Niagara a 2-0 lead.
  • Niagara added two more in the top of the second on a two-out, two-RBI double by Harrigan.
  • The Red Foxes answered in the bottom of the second with two runs of their own on a two-run blast by Coon, bringing the score to 4-2 in favor of Niagara.
  • With two outs in the bottom of the third, Marist took the lead on a three-run moonshot from sophomore Ali Milam.
  • Harrigan continued her torrid game with a two-RBI single on a ground ball up the middle in the top of the fourth, helping Niagara re-take the lead, 6-5.
  • Senior Miranda Perez reached second base with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but Emily Johnston recorded back-to-back strikeouts to end the game for the save.

  • Jennifer Szilagyi picked up the win in relief for Niagara, pitching three scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and picking up three strikeouts.

Marist is now 14-20 (1-1 MAAC) on the season, while the Purple Eagle move to 9-20 (2-2 MAAC).
