POUGHKEEPSIE, New York - The Marist College Department of Athletics honored its senior class May 1 at a banquet held at Christo's Restaurant.
Gabrielle Kelliher of the softball team and
Brian Corrigan of the men's lacrosse team were honored as Sportspeople of the Year.
Corrigan is a 2018 Tewaaraton Award Watch List & Senior Class Award candidate. Corrigan was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year and Second Team All-ECAC in 2016. Corrigan was also named First Team All-MAAC in 2016 and 2017. The senior captain has ranked second in the nation in save percentage and seventh in the nation in saves per game in 2016 and 2017.
Kelliher is a 2017 CoSIDA Academic All-American and a member of the 2016 CoSIDA Academic All-District Team along with being a 2018 Senior Class Award candidate. Kelliher has hit 30 career home runs, tied for second in program history. Along with being named Second Team NFCA All-Region in 2017, Kelliher is a two-time Second Team All MAAC selection (2016-17), a member of the 2016 MAAC All-Tournament Team and a 2015 MAAC All-Rookie Team selection.
The recipients of the James Pizzani Award were women's lacrosse defender
Stefanie Wenz and men's track & field's
Steven Rizzo. The Pizzani Award is given to those who best embody the qualities of the late James Pizzani, which are consistent with the college's core ideals of excellence in education, pursuit of higher human values, and dedication to the principle of service. James Pizzani was a 1964 Marist graduate who died in 1988 after a nine-month battle with cancer.
Winning their second awards of the evening, the President's Academic Achievement Award was also presented to softball's Kelliher and men's track & field's Rizzo. The honor was presented to the male and female student-athletes with the highest cumulative grade-point average. Men's cross country and women's tennis were the recipients of the Athletic Director's award, which is presented to the male and female teams with highest cumulative grade point average. Kelliher became the first student-athlete in the history of the Senior Awards Dinner to win both Sportsperson of the Year and the President's Academic Achievement Award. Rizzo became the first student-athlete in 17 years to win the President's Academic Achievement Award and the Pizzani Award.
The Individual Strength & Conditioning awards were presented to water polo's
Jessica Hermosillo, men's lacrosse's
Nick Nye, and football's
Wesley Beans. Women's and men's lacrosse won the Team Strength & Conditioning awards for the second consecutive season.
Each senior student-athlete was recognized at the banquet, and upon the completion of his/her playing career, each Marist student-athlete will receive a custom USB drive with photos and videos from their careers.
