Women's Soccer Comes Up Short Against Binghamton

Red Foxes Drop First Non-Conference Road Match

VESTAL, New York – The Marist women's soccer team would come up just short, falling 1-0 in its season opening non-conference road match against the Binghamton Bearcats Sunday afternoon. The Red Foxes are now 0-1 and the Bearcats move to 1-0-1.

SUMMARY
The Red Foxes and Bearcats played to a scoreless first half with only one shot on goal for either side. The lone shot on goal came off the foot of Anna Davies who nearly converted from just inside the top of the box after a long through ball from Kristen Reilly found the freshman in stride. Binghamton outshot the Red Foxes 5-2 overall in the first 45 minutes but Marist kept the Bearcat threat at bay. Each team had one corner.

After two long shots and a free-kick from just outside the box were fended off by the Red Foxes' defense, Binghamton finally broke through in the 65th minute after a corner kick from Kayla Saager found Dora Hayes on the back post. Hayes headed it home to give the Bearcats a 1-0 lead.

The Bearcats would hold the Red Foxes at bay for the remainder of the half as Marist's best chance came with just under a minute remaining after a flurry in front ultimately resulted in a redirected shot that fell wide.

QUOTE OF THE GAME
"I think that for our first time out as a team, there were a lot of really good takeaways. We put together 90 minutes against a physical, competitive opponent in a game that had action in both ends. The result came from a moment in which they capitalized, and our inability to do the same in the final third. We have a lot of players really starting to come into their own out there and I saw a couple of great individual performances today." - Head coach Leigh Howard

UP NEXT
The Red Foxes continue on the road and in non-conference play as they travel to Burlington, Vermont for and take on Maine on Friday, August 24th and Vermont on Sunday, August 26th. After the Vermont trip, the Red Foxes will open at home on Sunday, September 2nd against Rhode Island.
