GONZAGA, California – The men's soccer team fell to Saint Mary's college 2-0. The Red Foxes move to 0-2-0, while the Gaels emerge with a 3-0-0 record.
Saint Mary's scored in the 13th minute, off a chip by Jake Rudel. From then on, Marist would dominate the offensive statistics with 13 shots in the first half compared to the Gaels' six. The Gaels would come alive in the second half, shooting seven times compared to the Red Foxes' five, and would even score once again.
"I thought we played a great first half aside from that mistake on the goal" stated Coach Matt Viggiano after the game. "We got a bit unlucky to be down 1-0 in the half. In the second half the fatigue from travel seemed to kick in, and as we got later in the game we didn't have the push that we needed. They caught us and got a second goal, which showed they were more disciplined and that was the difference tonight. We're playing a tough schedule to prepare us for the MAAC, and we need to regroup for our game on Monday."
Marist had many great looks from an aggressive offense, but could not find their way past Remi Prieur who has not allowed a goal this season. Allen Gavilanes had six shots, two of which were on goal. Goalkeeper Svyatoslav Kozak made five saves in 90 minutes of play.
·       Marist led in shots 18-12 and corners 8-4.
·       Gavilanes had six shots with two on goal, and Juan Parada had two with both on goal.
The Red Foxes continue their stay on the west coast until Monday when they face No. 17 Pacific. The home opener for Marist will take place on September 8th when Rhode Island comes to Poughkeepsie.
