POUGHKEEPSIE, New York - The Marist men's soccer team defeated the Saint Peter's Peacocks 2-0 on Wednesday afternoon. The game was the first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match of the season for the Red Foxes. With the win, Marist is now 2-3-2 on the season (1-0 MAAC).
The Peacocks started out hot on offense, as they fired two shots within the first two minutes of the game. Ryan Sinnott made a great diving save on the second shot attempt, keeping Saint Peter's off the board.
The two teams remained relatively quiet until about the 36th minute. At 36:35, Alex Reis connected on his first goal of his career and gave the Red Foxes a 1-0 lead. Â
The second half was mostly about defense. Saint Peter's had its best scoring opportunity of the second half in the 57th minute but was unable to capitalize on two consecutive corner kicks.
Samad Bounthong iced the game in the 85th minute, converting a penalty kick to extend Marist's lead to 2-0.

·       Reis' goal was his first goal of his career.
·       Bounthong's goal was his second of the season.
·       Marist led in shots 11-7 and corners 8-3.
·       The Red Foxes' defense allowed just one shot on goal, that came in the 2nd minute of the match.
·       Reis and Justin Jaime paced Marist in Shots, with three each.

"Hard fought MAAC team-win on the road. Field conditions were not optimal but we found our footing and came away with three points" stated Coach Matt Viggiano following the game. "If we want to reach our goals this year we have to continue to do the little things right that lead to wins in this league. We got a lot of contribution from different individuals and our depth won out. This was a good first step."
The Red Foxes welcome the Rider Broncs to Tenney Stadium on Saturday, September 29 in what will be their first MAAC home game of the season. Kickoff is set for 7 P.M.
