POUGHKEEPSIE, New York - The Marist men's soccer team fell in non-conference action 2-0 to Rhode Island. With the loss, the Red Foxes record falls to 1-3, while URI improves to 5-0. The Rams have not been scored upon this season.
- Sophomore Allen Gavilanes had the first scoring opportunity for the Red Foxes. He dribbled the ball all the way up the field, dodging multiple defenders, but shot wide right.
- Rhode Island found the back of the net first. Edvin Akselsen put a good ball in front of Stavros Zarokostas who cut to the middle and shot to the bottom left corner at the 26:20 mark.
- URI would score again at 67:41 to take a 2-0 lead. Chae Brangman shot a rocket to the bottom left corner of the net.
- The Foxes had several scoring opportunities in the second half, but the Rams played strong defense to keep Marist off the scoreboard.
"I think first half we were very good. Unfortunately we made one mistake and we gave up a goal. We have to be a little more mature than we've been" remarked coach Matt Viggiano. "When you play good teams like Rhode Island you have to make the most of your opportunities. It should have been at worst tied at the half, if not 2-1 in our favor. If you give good teams a way out, they take them. Rhode Island is mature... that's an NCAA tournament team we played right there. They were a little smarter than us in the second half and were playing with a lead, and I think we got frustrated and didn't get the job done. Our first five games are against teams either ranked or receiving votes, and the hope is we learn from it and get better and be ready for conference play. We're playing a top ten team on Wednesday, so we can't rest on that. We need to be ready to go... We had a lot of great opportunities, golden opportunities. When things are firing on all cylinders for us, those are goals. I think we need to relax and let the game come to us, and run our plays and we'll be fine."
