Women’s Basketball Routs Iona

Well Balanced Team Play Leads the Red Foxes to Victory

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – Marist women's basketball wrapped up a three game home stand with a 76-36 win against Iona at McCann Arena Monday evening. Behind a strong offensive and defensive game, Marist defeated Iona for its largest margin of victory of the season. The Red Foxes move to 14-5 overall and 6-1 in conference play.

SUMMARY
  • Marist started the game shooting a perfect 6-for-6 from the field to go up 16-5 in the first five minutes of the game.
  • A three from junior Rebekah Hand gave Marist a 23-11 lead to end the first quarter. Redshirt junior Alana Gilmer finished the first quarter with 11 points to equalize Iona's score.
  • The Red Foxes went on a 12-2 run to open up the second quarter. Marist shared the ball well, tallying assists on five of the six baskets that quarter. A layup in the final seconds of the quarter gave Marist the 42-20 lead going into the second half.
  • The two teams traded baskets early on in the third quarter. After a free throw from sophomore Allie Best brought Marist's lead to 51-27 with 5:19 left in the quarter, the Red Foxes' shooting went cold. A three from senior Lovisa Henningsdottir broke the ice with two minutes left in the quarter. Marist took a 55-30 lead in the final frame of the game.
  • Marist slowed down the tempo in the fourth but played efficient basketball, not turning the ball over and shooting .500 from the field. The defense smothered Iona the rest of the way, holding the Gaels to six points in the final quarter.
