Women’s Soccer Falls Short At Fairfield

Kelchner Ties Career-High With 11 Saves In Loss

FAIRFIELD, Connecticut – Amidst pouring rain on Wednesday evening, Marist dropped a 2-0 decision to Fairfield despite sophomore goalkeeper Natalie Kelchner tying her career-best with 11 saves.
 
The Red Foxes slip to 3-3-1 in the MAAC and 6-8-1 overall. The Stags vault over Rider for second place in the conference at 5-1, while sporting a 8-4-2 record in 2019.
 
THE SUMMARY
  • Kelchner tallied her first save of the day when she dove to her right and turned aside an Ally Filipkowski shot in the third minute.
  • In the 29th minute, Fairfield's Liz Dumas went inside the 18-yard box, and Kelchner saved her shot from the left corner.
  • The Marist defense blocked consecutive shots from inside 20 yards with about 10 minutes until halftime.
  • Nine minutes out of halftime, Stephanie Tsangaris turned on a shot at the top of the box and rocketed a shot in the upper-left corner to give Fairfield the 1-0 edge.
  • Freshman forward Leah Barbieri slipped past the defense in the 61st minute for Marist's best offensive chance, but her left-footed kick curved wide left.
  • In the 82nd minute, junior captain Nicole Sasso poked a one-timer towards the left post, but Fairfield's goalkeeper poked it away.
  • Nicole Stryjek iced the game four minutes later.

  • Marist outshot Fairfield 10-9 in the second half.
  • Senior midfielder Taylor Mongno led the team with four shots.
  • Seven Red Foxes played the full 90 minutes.

  • Kelchner's effort tied her output against Army West Point on September 18.

  • This is the first time Marist has allowed multiple goals in five games.
  • The decision snaps a four-game unbeaten streak for the Red Foxes against the Stags.
