Women’s Soccer Defeats Saint Peter’s In MAAC Play

Svensson Secures All-Time Assists Record On Two Second-Half Goals

JERSEY CITY, New Jersey – Senior defender Alexa Svensson gained sole possession of Marist Women's Soccer's all-time assists record with helpers on goals from junior captain Nicole Sasso and sophomore forward Victoria Colatosti as the Red Foxes bested Saint Peter's 2-0 on Wednesday afternoon at Jaroschak Field.
 
Marist gains three points to move its MAAC record to 4-3-1, and 7-8-1 overall. Saint Peter's drops to 1-6-1 in the conference and 3-11-1 this season.
THE SUMMARY
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Natalie Kelchner made a save in the first minute when she redirected Madison Greenberg's free kick.
  • In the 24th minute, freshman forward Leah Barbieri bolted down the left side alone, lacing a shot near the left post that forced a diving save from Scarratt.
  • Sophomore forward Kaylin Sperley had three opportunities within two minutes early in the second half, capped off by a 10-yard one-timer that rolled wide right.
  • The first goal arrived in the 58th minute. Svensson inserted a free kick from the right sideline. Sasso got a touch on the ball and gave it to Colatosti, who fired it into the top-right corner.
  • After making five saves in the first half, Kelchner added her lone second-half save in the 70th minute.
  • Marist added the insurance goal when Svensson rocketed a corner from the right and connected with a leaping Sasso, who headed it home past Peacocks netminder Victoria Scarratt in the 73rd minute.
 
THE STATS
  • Sasso finished with a goal and an assist, Svensson had the two helpers, and Colatosti earned two points with the score.
  • Marist edged Saint Peter's with 22 shots compared to 15, including a 9-6 advantage in shots on target.
  • After just two corners in the opening stanza, the Red Foxes kicked five to finish the game with a 7-3 triumph in the category over the Peacocks.
  • Redshirt sophomore midfielder Kristen Prevosto led the team with four shots, while five other Red Foxes tallied multiple shots.
  • Kelchner made six saves in net for her second individual shutout in conference play.
 
THE NOTES
  • Svensson, who now has 23 career assists, moves ahead of Rycke Guiney, '14.
  • For three consecutive seasons, the Commack, NY product has recorded at least six assists. She is two shy of her season-best, which she accomplished last year.
  • All nine of Sasso's points this year have come in MAAC play.
  • Colatosti retakes the team lead with five goals and 12 points.
  • Marist's 22 shots are a season-high, and the 37 shots are most in a Marist contest this season.
  • Six of the Red Foxes' eight goals scored against MAAC foes have come via the corner kick.

  • Marist returns to Poughkeepsie, NY for its regular season home finale and Senior Day on Saturday, October 26 vs. Manhattan.
  • Kickoff is targeted for 5 p.m.
