Women’s Tennis Dominates Monmouth In MAAC Opener

Red Foxes Sweep Singles, Earn Doubles Point In 7-0 Decision

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – Marist Women's Tennis win the doubles point and all six singles points for a 7-0 sweep of Monmouth in the 2019-20 MAAC opener on Friday afternoon at Marist's Tennis Pavilion.
 
The Red Foxes win their first dual match and conference match of the year to go to 1-0. The Hawks fall to 0-1 in conference and 2-2 in dual matches this year.
 
DOUBLES
  • Senior Amy Galloway and freshman Vanessa Ciano finished first with a 6-0 rout over Emily Manzo and Caroline Mattise in the third position.
  • Junior captains Julia Gabay and Sam Galu took home the win in the first flight, overcoming Nicole Gasser and Sophia Fredriksson 6-2.
  • Senior Jada Tijani and sophomore Madison Price took Ann Spurka and Cinonye Gabriel to a set tiebreak, but fell 8-6 in it for a 7-6 loss.
 
SINGLES
  • Galu made quick work of Gabriel in the fifth flight, 6-1, 6-2.
  • Tijani was next in the sixth position with a 6-2, 6-4 decision over Sydney DeNardo
  • In the third flight, Ciano overpowered Fredriksson 6-2, 6-2.
  • Freshman Nina McAllan beat Manzo 6-2, 6-3 in the fourth position.
  • Price rebounded in the second singles to defeat Gasser 6-3, 6-1.
  • Gabay concluded the match with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Spurka in the first flight.
 
NOTES
  • Marist has won five consecutive MAAC openers, all by 7-0.
  • This is the second straight season Marist dispatched Monmouth to begin conference play.
  • Ciano recorded her first-career wins in dual match doubles and singles, while McAllan added her first Marist singles dual match triumph.
 
UP NEXT
  • The Red Foxes close out dual match competition in the fall with another match vs. Rider.The match is expected to begin at Noon from Lawrenceville, NJ.
