Volleyball Falls to Quinnipiac

Fergus Became the 9th Player in Program History to Reach 1,000 Career Kills

HAMDEN, Connecticut – The Marist volleyball team suffered a 3-1 loss to Quinnipiac on Wednesday night. With her 12th kill in the fourth set of the match, Megan Fergus became the ninth player in program history to reach the 1,000 career kills club.

With the loss, the Red Foxes fall to 6-10 overall (4-2 MAAC).  The Bobcats improve to 6-9 (2-4 MAAC) with the win.

SUMMARY
  • Marist got off to a quick start in the first set. With Sarah Austin serving, the Red Foxes went on a 5-0 run to take an early 9-5 lead forcing Quinnipiac to burn its first timeout. The pause would not stifle Marist, as it extended its lead to 18-10 after a beautiful kill from Austin. The Bobcats used a 4-0 run to close to within six points, but the Red Foxes used a timeout to recover, and went on to win the set 25-18.
  • Set two was a back-and-forth affair. There were 10 total ties and eight lead changes in the early going, leading to a deadlock at 18. Two consecutive kills from Quinnipiac at that point gave the Bobcats a 20-18 edge and forced the Red Foxes to call for time. The Red Foxes would then tie the match on three separate occasions, at 21, 22, and 24, but the Bobcats took the next two points to win the set 26-24.
  • After a 5-5 start to the third set, the Bobcats scored eight unanswered to take a 13-5 lead and force a Red Fox timeout. Marist would not quit, using a gradual 18-10 run, capped by a great service ace from Gabby Murray, to tie the match at 23. Despite the great comeback, Quinnipiac was able to rally to take the next two points to win the set 25-23.
  • Set four was also tightly contested, as neither team led by more than four points all the way through. This led to a tie at 20, with both teams struggling to stop each other's attacks in the set. Quinnipiac took a 21-20 lead, but a kill from Murray tied the match at 21. The Bobcats took a 22-21 lead, but a bed set evened up the score at 22. Quinnipiac took a 23-22 lead, but Fergus fired a kill to once again tie the match. After the Bobcats took a 24-23 lead, they were able to close out the match with a service ace, winning the game 3-1.
