Volleyball Defeats Siena, Picking Up a Season Sweep of the Saints

Fergus Leads the Way for Marist with a Match-High 13 Kills

LOUDONVILLE, New York – The Marist volleyball team opened a four-match road trip by sweeping the Siena Saints on Friday night. The victory was the Red Foxes second in a row, and fifth in their last six matches. Marist won all six sets it played against Siena this season, resulting in a season sweep on a 2-0 record.

With the win, the Red Foxes improve to 11-12 on the season, and 9-4 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play. Meanwhile, the Saints fall to 9-15 overall on the year, and 4-9 in the conference. Marist now sits in sole possession of fourth place in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference standings.

SUMMARY
  • Marist got off to a blazing start, and never relinquished momentum all the way through the first set. The Red Foxes opened on a 7-1 run, and Siena would not sniff the lead the rest of the way. Back-to-back kills from Stephanie Stone extended Marist's lead to 14-7, and Siena called for timeout to try and quell Marist's hot start. It did not work, and the Red Foxes closed the set on an 11-2 run, picking up a commanding 25-9 set one victory, a set in which they only committed one single error.
  • Marist's torrid start continued into set two, as Marist took an early 10-7 lead. Nikki DeSerpa picked up three kills in the next five rallies, extending the Red Foxes' lead to 14-8. After three straight attack errors, Marist called for time with a five-point lead to regroup. Out of the timeout, Fergus crushed three straight kills, and put the Red Foxes in front by a score of 20-12. Marist went on to take the set 25-16.
  • As per the theme of the whole match, the Red Fox offense just could not be stopped in set three. Marist took an early 13-8 lead, and forced Siena to burn its first timeout. A 4-1 run out of the timeout, capped by a monster Stone kill, all but put a bow on it for the Red Foxes. Marist went on to win the set, 25-17, and took the match 3-0.
