Men's Soccer to Face Saint Peter's in MAAC Semifinals

#4 Red Foxes to Tackle #1 Peacocks in Jersey City

JERSEY CITY, New Jersey - Having advanced to the MAAC Semifinals, Marist men's soccer now is set to face top-seeded Saint Peter's on Thursday, November 14 at 1 p.m. The Red Foxes defeated Manhattan in the MAAC Quarterfinals, while the Peacocks earned a bye and now play their first game of the playoffs.

SEASON RECAP
  • Marist went 9-8 overall in the regular season, earning non-conference victories over Gonzaga, Saint Joseph's and Hofstra.
  • The Red Foxes went 6-4 in the conference, and 6-2 in the final eight games.
  • Marist defeated Manhattan in the Quarterfinals by a score of 2-1 with goals by Allen Gavilanes and Justin Jaime.
  • With the win, the Red Foxes finished the season with an 8-2 home record, their best mark in over two decades.
RED FOX LEADERS
  • All-MAAC First Team selection Gavilanes leads the pack with seven goals and six assists for 20 total points. With his assist against the Jaspers, he became the Marist all-time assists leader in the Division I era.
  • All-Rookie honoree Stefan Copetti has played exceptionally well in his first collegiate season, racking up four goals and six assists for 14 total points.
  • Second-Teamer Huib Achterkamp has contributed six goals while holding down the back line on defense. He has gone 5-for-5 on penalty kicks, and ranks second in the nation in that category.
  • MAAC Goalkeeper of the Year Samuel Ilin boasts a save percentage of 72.0 with 67 stops on the year.
PLAYOFF HISTORY
  • Marist is in the MAAC Semifinals for the second-consecutive season, having earned the third seed in the 2018.
  • That year, they defeated sixth-seeded Saint Peter's in the quarterfinals by a score of 1-0.
  • The Red Foxes are aiming to appear in the MAAC Championship game for the first time since 2005, when they last won the title.
BACK WITH A VENGEANCE
  • Saint Peter's handed Marist a heartbreaking loss in overtime on October 23 by a score of 3-2.
  • The Peacocks took a 2-0 lead in the 67th minute, but Huib Achterkamp scored twice in the 72nd and 78th minutes to tie up the score.
  • In the first overtime period, Dominic Laws broke free off the Red Fox defense and scored the golden goal, stealing the victory in Poughkeepsie.
SCOUTING SAINT PETER'S
  • The Peacocks' roster features seven All-MAAC selections, including Offensive Player of the Year Dominic Laws. The junior recorded 11 goals and seven assists this season.
  • First-Team selection Jordan Jowers is another of the top players in the conference, having tallied seven goals and six assists.
  • Goalkeeper Herman Wulff was named to the All-Rookie team, and has a save percentage of 77.3 with 51 stops.
PLAYOFF BRACKET
  • The winner of this game will move on to face the winner of #2 Quinnipiac and #3 Iona in the MAAC Championship finals.
  • The highest remaining seed will host the game on Sunday, November 17.
