Men’s Tennis Closes West Point Invite

Marist Starts Strong Over Three-Day Event

WEST POINT, New York – Marist Men's Tennis wrapped up the fall portion of its 2019-20 schedule with the West Point Invite, hosted by Army over the weekend. The event featured teams facing off in exclusively singles or doubles in a dual match format.
 
FRIDAY
  • The Red Foxes edged out UConn 4-3 in singles play.
  • Marist fell 2-1 in doubles to MAAC-foe Monmouth.
    • Sowinski and Sequerth won 6-3 against Gourtzonian and Zeiler.
    • In competitive matches, Oxner/Giribet Lopez as well as Schouten/Gonzalez Bonorino fell 7-5 to Benaim/Martinez and Busato/Pachnev, respectively.
 
SATURDAY
  • In the day's opening match, Marist swept Holy Cross 3-0 in doubles.
    • Oxner and Giribet Lopez edged Slowinski and Murphy 7-6 (3).
    • Schouten and Gonzalez Bonorino dispatched Chen and Ruenhorst 6-3.
    • Sowinski and Sequerth won 7-5 over O'Flynn and Nelson.
  • Host Army got the best of Marist 4-2 in singles.
    • Giribet Lopez nabbed the win over Lake in a three-set tiebreak, 6-2, 1-6, 10-8.
    • Marist's other winner was Sequerth, who also needed three sets to defeat Jose, 6-3, 4-6, 10-8.
    • Other Marist matches included Schouten (2-6, 2-6), Gonzalez Bonorino (4-6, 4-6), Oxner (2-6, 4-6), and Sowinski (6-2, 3-6, 4-10)
  • NJIT was a 3-0 doubles winner over Marist to round out the afternoon.
    • Sowinski and Sequerth were defeated in a close 7-6 (6) matchup with Sabogal and Townes.
    • Oxner/Giribet Lopez and Schouten/Gonzalez Bonorino dropped 6-4 results.
 
SUNDAY
  • In doubles play, Marist couldn't beat St. Bonaventure, falling 2-1.
    • Schouten and Gonzalez Bonorino swept Estevarona/Rutkowski 6-0.
    • Sowinski and Giribet Lopez dropped a narrow match to Rivolo/Malmberg 7-5.
    • Yazdi and redshirt freshman Alexi Watelet sustained a 6-1 setback.
  • St. John's swept Marist 6-0 in singles to close the event.
    • Yazdi had Marist's toughest match, forcing a tiebreak but coming up short vs. James 1-6, 6-3, 8-10.
    • The rest of the matches went in straight sets: Giribet Lopez (1-6, 3-6), Gonzalez Bonorino (0-6, 1-6), Sowinski (5-7, 2-6), Sequerth (2-6, 3-6), and freshman Moritz Daxboeck (3-6, 3-6).

  • Marist awaits 2020, when it begins the spring slate of its schedule.
