LEXINGTON, Virginia – The Marist men's basketball team came from behind to beat the VMI Keydets 58-56 on Friday night.
Michael Cubbage won the game with a go-ahead basket with just three seconds remaining in regulation.

- Despite a quick five points from Tyler Saint-Furcy to start the game, the Red Foxes found themselves down 10-5 just a few minutes into the game and were forced to take a timeout.
- Back-to-back threes from Matt Turner near the halfway mark of the first half evened up the game at 15, but VMI answered with an 11-2 scoring run to retake a 26-17 lead.
- VMI built a game-high lead of 13, but did not score for the final 3:01 of the first half. The Keydets took a 38-29 lead into the locker room. Â
- Michael Cubbage caught fire early in the second half, scoring 11 of his 15 points at the time in the first 10 minutes of the period. He kept the Red foxes close, as they trailed 54-48 with 6:50 left to play.
- Zion Tordoff converted back-to-back layups to cut the deficit to just one point with 4:32 left on the clock. Marist called timeout after a block from Matt Herasme kept the deficit there.
- The Red Foxes tied the game on a Matt Herasme free throw with 4:20 remaining, but the Keydets re-took the lead on a bucket from Myles Lewis with under three minutes to play.
- Cubbage tied the game with a layup with 55 seconds left, and then won the game with a go-ahead pull-up jumper with just three seconds left in regulation.

- Cubbage had a game-high 19 points and added seven rebounds.
- Zion Tordoff played great on the interior, scoring 14 points and grabbing seven boards.
- Saint-Furcy was the other Red Fox in double-figures with 10 points. He also had three rebounds, two steals, and a block.
- Marist shot 77% from the line, while VMI shot just 38% from the charity stripe.

- This is Marist first win in a season opener since the 2007-08 season.
- This the first time the Red Foxes have been over .500 since the end of the 2007-08 season.
- Marist is now 2-1 all-time against VMI. This is the first time the road team has prevailed in the series.
- Saint-Furcy started in his first collegiate game.

"We knew what we were going to run," head coach
John Dunne said of the game's final play. "Our whole plan was that if we didn't get anything our of the pick-and-roll action, then Cubbage needs to have the confidence to make it. At the end of the day, players have to make the plays, and Cubbage might the right play and drilled the pull-up."

- With the win, the Red Foxes are now 1-0 on the season.
- VMI now is now 0-2. Â
