POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist men's and women's tennis teams return to action this weekend, as both teams travel to Hempstead, NY for an afternoon matchup against Hofstra on Saturday, February 16. Both matches are set to begin at 2 p.m.
The Red Foxes continued their road trip against the Colgate Raiders on Saturday, February 9. Marist defeated Colgate 5-2, pickup up its second straight win, and improving to 2-1 overall on the season.
Piotr Sowinski and
Carlos Moreno set the pace for the match, picking up the first doubles point after winning a crucial set against Albon/Gupta, and narrowly escaping with a 7-6 win. For his performance on the weekend,
Lars Schouten was named MAAC Player of the Week.
The women's team played its first home match of the season on Sunday, February 10 against the University of Massachusetts. The Red Foxes were defeated 6-1 by the Minutewomen, falling to 2-5 on the season.
Sophia Moeller earned Marist's one point on the day, defeating Anna Napadiy in the third singles spot.
Hofstra is currently 3-2 overall on the season, and 2-1 in home matches. The Pride are currently on a two-game losing streak, having lost to Morgan State and UConn the past two matches. Last time out, they were defeated by the Huskies 4-3, on Sunday, February 10. Marcus Smith, Coco Haener and Giacomo Pezzoli each won their singles matches, but Connecticut also won three singles points, and stole the doubles point, securing the victory.
The women's team is currently 2-1 overall on the season, with all of their games taking place at home. They are coming off a 5-2 victory over the defending MEAC Champion Morgan State on Saturday, February 9. Sarah Catherine Herndon highlighted the match for Hofstra, clinching the team win with a victory in the fourth lot over Averiana Mitchell.
The women return to action first, as they will travel to Pennsylvania to face off against Lafayette on Friday, February 22. On Saturday, February 23, the men's team will also be in Pennsylvania, taking on Lehigh. The women's match is set to begin at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, and the men's match will start at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
