SOUTH ORANGE, New Jersey – The Marist softball team prevailed twice on Saturday as the Red Foxes opened their season with victories over Saint Peter's (13-3, five innings) and Seton Hall (8-1). Both games were played at Seton Hall.
- Freshman Kaley Coltrain opened the scoring with a two-run double in her first collegiate at-bat, which brought home sophomore Caroline Baratta and junior Ali Milam in the top of the first.
- In her first collegiate at-bat, freshman Morgan Gianelle's RBI double brought home senior Brandi Coon, and put Marist up 3-0 in the first.
- Saint Peter's answered with two runs in its half of the first.
- In the third, the teams traded homers as Milam went yard in the top of the inning, and Georgia Verrasto answered for the Peacocks.
- Milam's grand slam broke the game open in the fourth, and sophomore Lauren Beal added a two-run double later in the inning.
- Milam added a two-run triple in the fifth, and Coltrain had a sacrifice fly, as the Red Foxes prevailed by the mercy rule.
- Milam went 3-for-3 with seven RBIs and four runs scored.
- Baratta was 4-for-4 with three runs scored.
- Senior Brooke Peterson earned the win with three scoreless innings of relief.
- Milam's third homer of the day, a three-run blast in the top of the first, opened the scoring. Senior Madison Lee added a two-run, two-out single as the Red Foxes put up a five-spot in the opening frame.
- Gianelle's RBI single gave Marist a 6-0 lead in the second.
- Haley Arteaga's RBI double pushed across a run for the Pirates in the third.
- Coltrain's RBI groundout in the fourth expanded Marist's lead to 7-1.
- Lee's RBI single in the seventh closed out the scoring.
- Baratta went 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
- Milam went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored.
- Lee went 2-for-4 with three RBIs.
- Calista Phippen earned the win in her collegiate debut in the circle. She struck out seven in four innings. Senior Megan Beiermeister finished with three scoreless innings for the save.
- Milam went 5-for-7 with three homers and 10 RBIs. She also had an outfield assist.
- Baratta went 7-for-8 with five runs scored and a stolen base.
- The Red Foxes went 6-for-7 on stolen base attempts.
- Marist did not commit an error in either game.
- In 12 innings, Marist pitchers struck out 10 and allowed just eight hits and three walks.
Marist journeys to Nashville for the Tennessee State Winter Warm Up Tournament March 1-3. The Red Foxes will play five games in three days.
