NASHVILLE, Tennessee – The Marist softball team went 1-1 on Friday in its first day of competition at the Tennessee State Winter Warm-Up Tournament.
In their first game of the day, a five-run fifth sparked Marist's 6-2 victory over host Tennessee State. In game two, the Red Foxes fell 12-10 in eight innings to East Tennessee State.
Marist is now 3-1 on the season.
- Reese Weber's RBI single in the bottom of the first opened the scoring.
- Tennessee State maintained its 1-0 lead until the top of the fifth. The Red Foxes scored five in that frame, thanks to RBI doubles by junior Ali Milam and freshman Kaley Coltrain.
- Katie Schneider's homer cut Marist's lead to 5-2 in the bottom of fifth, but Milam's RBI double in the top of the sixth closed out the scoring.
- Milam finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs, two doubles, and a run scored.
- Senior Casey Page scored two runs, and freshman Morgan Gianelle went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
- Freshman Calista Phippen (2-0) went six strong innings for the win. Sophomore Nicole Teague tossed a scoreless seventh.
- For Tennessee State, Weber finished 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Schneider scored both of her team's runs.
- Coltrain's RBI double brought home Milam, which gave Marist a 1-0 lead in the first.
- East Tennessee State scored five times in the top of the second, and took a 5-1 lead.
- Marist then scored five times in its half of the third. Sophomore shortstop Caroline Baratta stole home on the front end of a double steal, and senior Madison Lee followed with a grand slam.
- East Tennessee State answered with a three-run top of the fourth, and grabbed an 8-6 lead. Nikki Grupp and Kylie Toler hit back-to-back homers in the frame.
- Marist tied the game after an RBI single by Coltrain in the fourth and an RBI double by Milam in the sixth.
- East Tennessee State scored four times in the top of the eighth, which included a three-run triple by Malloree Schurr.
- Marist rallied for two in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI fielder's choice by senior Brandi Coon and an RBI double by Coltrain. The Red Foxes brought the tying run to the plate, but came no closer.
- Coltrain went 4-for-4 with three RBIs, two doubles, one run scored, and one walk.
- Baratta, Coon, and Milam had two hits apiece.
- Although senior Kallen Leeseberg took the loss, she allowed just two hits, one walk, and one earned run in 4.2 innings.
- Schurr drove in three runs for East Tennessee State, and scored two.
- MacKenzie Dyson (3-1) earned the win with three innings of relief.
Marist is set for two more games on Saturday. The Red Foxes will face Portland State at 11 a.m., followed by North Alabama at 3 p.m.
