Marist Earns First Win of the Season With Road Victory Over Hartford

The Red Foxes Won a Back and Forth Contest Against the Hawks

HARTFORD, Connecticut – Marist men's lacrosse earned its first win of the season with a 14-13 victory over Hartford. The Red Foxes played excellent at the face-off position to give the offensive opportunities to come from behind and win. The Red Foxes' record improves to 1-2 while the Hawks drops to 0-3.
 
SUMMARY
  • Hartford raced out to a 3-0 lead with 5:26 left in the first quarter. Evan Gagne got Marist on the board with his first goal of the season. The two teams traded goals to close out the  quarter 4-2
  • Marist opened up the second quarter with a 3-0 run to take its first lead of the day at 5-4 with 6:40 left in the quarter.
  • Hartford scored on back-to-back man up goals to take a 7-6 lead into the locker room at halftime.
  • The Hawks scored two goals to open the third quarter to reclaim their three point cushion.
  • Joe Tierney and Jake Weinman made acrobatic plays to score and make it a one goal game. Peyton Smith, who had been stellar all day at the face-off position, joined the scoring spree to tie the game up at 10 all with 5:20 left in the third quarter.
  • The Hawks scored to close out the quarter and took the lead at 11-10
  • Down by two early in the fourth quarter, Weinman and Jojo Pirreca each scored within a 45 second time frame to tie the game at 12-12 and force Hartford to burn a timeout.
  • Weinman's third goal of the game put Marist up 14-13 with 3:34 left in the game.
  • With possession and 2:44 left in the game, Hartford had a chance to send the game into overtime. The Hawks turned the ball over and a penalty by Hartford reset the shot clock to allow Marist to drain the game clock and walk away with the win.
STATS
  • Marist could not be stopped at the face-off position. Smith was 27-31 at the face-off and collected 14 ground balls. JT Roselle had nine ground balls, many picked up at the wings of Smith.
  • Nine different Red Foxes scored. Tierney led all Red Foxes with four points.
  • Marist outshot Hartford 47-32.
  • The Red Foxes were almost perfect on clears, going 16-for-17.
  • Ty Thompson led Hartford with seven points.

"I think the most impressive thing, and we put this at the bottom of our scouting report, was something Eric Coombs told us." Lauded Head Coach Keegan Wilkinson "He said he loved this year's team because they play with that attitude and heart he's seen from past Marist teams. We gotta just keep building off that."
 
UP NEXT
Marist will travel to Stony Brook on Saturday, March 2 for a noon game at Lavalle Stadium.
