Women's Basketball Tops Manhattan to Even Series

Rebekah Hand Double-Doubles in Win

RIVERDALE, New York – Women's basketball (17-7, 9-3 MAAC) snapped Manhattan's win streak (6-15, 4-6 MAAC) on Thursday night, 62-51, to even up the season series. The Jaspers came out strong to lead by double-digits after the first quarter, but a 21-2 scoring advantage for the Red Foxes in the second quarter turned the tides and Marist controlled the rest of the game for the 11-point victory.
SUMMARY
  • Manhattan started off strong and made five of their first seven shots to lead 12-7 midway through the first.
  • The Jaspers shot 62% in the first quarter compared to Marist's 27% to lead 20-10.
  • Marist started off the second quarter with an 11-2 run to cut the Manhattan lead to 22-21 at the 4:15 mark.
  • The Red Foxes went on to outscore the Jaspers 21-2 in the second quarter. They held Manhattan to 1-of-15 from the field.
  • Marist outscored Manhattan 15-12 in the third to lead 46-34. Both teams struggled from the floor, but the Red Foxes drew fouls to earn 10 free throw attempts
  • Manhattan fought hard to close the gap to single digits at multiple points during the fourth, but clutch free throw shooting by Marist kept the lead from shrinking as they came home with the win.
KEY STATS
  • Two points in a quarter is the least that Marist has allowed this season.
  • Rebekah Hand tallied her third double-double of the season with 21 points, 10 rebounds and an assist.
  • Manhattan had a 60-47 field goal-attempt advantage, but the Red Foxes had a 31-17 free throw-attempt advantage, making 71% from the line.

QUOTE
"I thought in the first quarter we did some good things, but every time we made a mistake they made us pay for it," reflected Coach Brian Giorgis. "Once we turned up the pressure, we forced some turnovers and got out running and hit some buckets to get the lead. We just kept it from there."

UP NEXT
  • The redemption tour continues for women's basketball as they travel to Rider (12-9, 8-2 MAAC) on Saturday, Feb. 9. The game begins at 2 p.m. on ESPN3.
