POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist men's basketball team rolled to a 79-58 victory over Niagara on Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play on Friday night at McCann Arena.
- Niagara scored the game's first four points, but Marist answered with eight straight points – the last five coming from senior forward Ryan Funk.
- With 9:36 left in the first half, the Purple Eagles took the lead back on a three-pointer by Raheem Solomon at 18-17. But Funk answered with a three-pointer on the ensuing possession, and the Red Foxes led the rest of the way.
- An 8-0 run late in the first half pushed Marist's lead to 13, and the Red Foxes had a 41-30 advantage after the first 20 minutes.
- With 11:38 left, a three-point play by Niagara's Marvin Prochet brought the Purple Eagles' deficit into single digits at 55-46. Marist answered with a 9-0 run, and led by at least 15 the rest of the way. The Red Foxes' lead reached as much as 24.
- Funk led all scorers with 25 points. He shot 9-for-12 from the field and 7-for-9 from three-point range. He also grabbed six rebounds.
- Red-shirt junior center Aleksandar Dozic had 11 points and team highs of seven assists and seven rebounds.
- Freshman point guard Darius Hines totaled 12 points and six assists against just one turnover.
- Marist shot .593 (31-for-54) from the field and .556 (15-for-27) from three-point range. The Red Foxes had 21 assists against just seven turnovers.
- Solomon led Niagara with 16 points, and Greg King grabbed a team-high six rebounds.
- Niagara's Marvin Prochet scored 11 points on 5-for-12 shooting from the field and 0-for-3 shooting from three-point range. Prochet entered the night as the MAAC's second-leading scorer (17.8 points per game) and the conference's leader in three-pointers per game (3.1) and three-point percentage (.462).
- Funk tied his career high in three-pointers, as he made seven for the third time in his last seven games. It marked the 10th game in his career with at least 20 points.
- Marist is 8-0 this season when Hines scores at least 10 points.
- Marist's 21 assists were a season high, and its seven turnovers were a season low.
- Marist's 21-point victory was its largest margin since a 31-point triumph over Quinnipiac on March 2, 2014.
- Marist is now 10-14 overall and 5-7 in the MAAC. The Red Foxes won their second straight.
- Niagara is now 11-13 overall and 4-7 in conference play.
"I'm really proud of the effort," head coach
John Dunne said. "Defensively, for the most part, we were right on with our game plan. … Offensively, I thought we were extremely unselfish."
Marist will travel to Quinnipiac for a contest on Friday, Feb. 15 at 8 p.m.
