HAMDEN, Connecticut – The Marist men's basketball team prevailed at Quinnipiac, 63-61, on Friday night in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game at Peoples' United Center. The Red Foxes have won three straight, and four of their last five.
- After Quinnipiac jumped out to an early 6-4 lead, the Red Foxes held the Bobcats scoreless for a stretch of six minutes, and went on a 10-0 run.
- A basket by senior guard Brian Parker at the 8:58 mark gave Marist its largest lead of the second half at 18-8.
- Sophomore guard Austin Williams scored the final four points of the first half, which gave the Red Foxes a 27-21 advantage after the first 20 minutes.
- Marist's lead reached 10 twice in the second half, with the second instance coming on a three-point by red-shirt junior center Aleksandar Dozic with 1:55 remaining. This gave Marist a 55-45 edge with 1:55 remaining.
- With 33 seconds remaining, Quinnipiac's Rich Kelly hit a three-pointer to cut Marist's lead to 58-55, which was the slimmest margin to that point in the second half. On Marist's ensuing possession, Dozic was credited with a basket after a goaltending call. Tyrese Williams answered with a three-pointer with 15 seconds remaining, which made the score 60-58. Freshman guard Matt Herasme then drained two free throws, which put Marist back up four.
- With 1.8 seconds left, Kelly's three-pointer cut Marist's lead to 62-61. Senior forward Isaiah Lamb was then fouled with 1.2 remaining. Lamb made the first free throw, and missed the second. A desperation heave from Quinnipiac's Cameron Young from approximately 85 feet away came up short as time expired.
- Williams led the Red Foxes with a season-high 14 points, followed by Parker with 12, and senior forward Ryan Funk with 10. Williams and Parker each shot 6-for-8 from the field.
- Parker had a game-high six assists, which tied a season high, against just one turnover. He was also tied for the team lead in rebounds (four) with Dozic, Herasme, and Williams.
- Young led all scorers with 24 points. The only other Bobcat in double figures was Jacob Rigoni with 13.
- Marist committed a season-low six turnovers, while Quinnipiac had 10.
- This is Marist's second three-game winning streak of the season.
- The Red Foxes have now set a season low in turnovers in back-to-back games. Marist had seven at Niagara on Feb. 8.
- This was Marist's first win at Quinnipiac in program history (six tries).
- Marist held Quinnipiac to a season low in scoring in MAAC play.
"It was a total team effort," head coach
John Dunne said. "If we focus and keep playing the way we've been playing, hopefully they can believe they can beat anyone."
- Marist is now 11-14 overall and 6-7 in the MAAC.
- Quinnipiac, which came in having won three straight, is now 13-11 overall and 8-5 in the MAAC.
- The Red Foxes travel to Monmouth for their lone meeting of the season with the Hawks on Sunday, Feb. 17. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
