MOUNT PLEASANT, South Carolina – The Marist softball shut out Youngstown State, 2-0, in its final game of the Charleston Invitational on Sunday afternoon.
- Youngstown State loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the second, but freshman Calista Phippen induced a pop-up and then recorded a strikeout, which kept the game scoreless.
- Yazmine Romero had a leadoff single for the Penguins in the third, and then stole both second and third with one out. However, she was stranded there after Phippen induced a lineout and foul out.
- Marist broke open the scoreless tie in the fifth. Freshman Hailee Jantorno started a two-out rally with a bunt single. Sophomore Caroline Baratta followed with a single, and Jantorno came home with the games' first run on an error. Baratta then came home after senior Casey Page followed with a single.
- Phippen retired the final seven Youngstown State batters.
- Phippen (4-0) tossed a three-hit shutout with eight strikeouts. It was her first career shutout and second career complete game. In two games in the tournament, Phippen struck out 24 in 16 innings and allowed just one run, which was unearned.
- Baratta and Page both had two hits apiece.
- Addy Jarvis (1-4) pitched a complete game for Youngstown State. Jarvis allowed five hits and one walk, and struck out nine.
- Marist improved to 5-6 on the season.
