SACRAMENTO, California – The Marist softball team began its 14-game West Coast road trip with a split on day one of the Capital Classic. The Red Foxes defeated Fairleigh Dickinson, 1-0, in the first game of the day, but were defeated by Sacramento State, 6-2, in their second game.
Marist is now 6-7 on the season.
- In the top of the fourth, senior left fielder Madison Lee threw pinch-runner Jillian Ward out at the plate for the final out of the inning, which maintained a scoreless tie.
- The game's lone run came in the bottom of the fourth, when red-shirt junior Claire Oberdorf's single drove in senior Casey Page, who started a one-out rally with a single.
- Freshman Calista Phippen tossed her second straight shutout. Phippen allowed seven hits, walked just one, and struck out six. She pitched out of a first and second with one out jam in the seventh to finish off the game.
- Erica Johnson pitched a complete game for Fairleigh Dickinson (5-15). In six innings, Johnson gave up three hits and one walk while recording seven strikeouts. Marist's lone run was unearned.
- Sacramento State (13-11) struck first with single runs in the first and third innings.
- The Hornets broke the game with a four-run fifth. Sydney Rasmussen had a two-run single in the inning. Rasmussen finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
- The Red Foxes scored a run apiece in the sixth and seventh. Oberdorf's sacrifice fly brought home Page in the sixth. In the final inning, freshman Alyssa Yarem's double brought home classmate Morgan Gianelle.
- Savanna Corr went six innings and struck out four to earn the victory for Sacramento State.
- Page went 2-for-3 with a run scored.
- Phippen improved her record to 5-0. She has not allowed an earned run in her last 23.2 innings.
- Page went 3-for-6 with two runs scored on the day.
- Marist is back in action on Saturday with two more games at the Capital Classic. Saturday's games will be played at UC Davis.
- The Red Foxes will play Fairleigh Dickinson at 12:30, and UC Davis at 5:30.
