Women's Basketball Falls to Quinnipiac in MAAC Championship

Vander Weide Scores Career-High 25

ALBANY, New York – The third-seeded Marist women's basketball team was defeated by top-seeded Quinnipiac, 81-51, in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championship game on Monday afternoon at the Times Union Center.
 
Summary
  • Marist hit its first six shots from the field, which enabled the Red Foxes to jump out to a 15-10 lead at the 6:15 mark of the first quarter.
  • The Red Foxes then went scoreless for 5:18, as Quinnipiac responded with a 6-0 run to take the lead back at 16-15. This run included five Marist turnovers.
  • In the final minute of the first quarter, Marist countered with a basket by senior Lovisa Henningsdottir and a three by red-shirt junior Grace Vander Weide to re-claim the lead. The Red Foxes led 20-18 after 10 minutes.
  • Marist did not score for the first 4:08 of the second quarter. In this time, Quinnipiac ran off eight straight points, including a pair of threes by Edel Thornton, as the Bobcats captured a 26-22 lead.

  • Quinnipiac took a 19-point lead after 30 minutes, as the Bobcats outscored the Red Foxes 23-13 in the third quarter. Vander Weide scored nine of the Red Foxes' 13 points in the third.
  • In the fourth quarter, the Bobcats' largest lead was the final margin of 30. After Jen Fay's basket at the 8:47 mark for Quinnipiac, the Red Foxes never got closer than 20.

  • Vander Weide finished with a career-high 25 points and led the Red Foxes with seven rebounds. She shot 11-for-17 from the field, and 3-for-4 from three-point range. Vander Weide was the lone Red Fox to score in double digits.
  • Fay scored 25 and grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds. She shot 9-for-15 from the field, and 5-for-8 from three-point range.
  • Four Bobcats scored in double digits. Fay was joined by Aryn McClure (18 points), Thornton (16 points), and Paula Strautmane (10 points).
  • Quinnipiac outrebounded Marist, 50-27. The Bobcats grabbed 23 offensive rebounds, and outscored the Red Foxes 28-5 in second chance points.
  • Marist committed 16 turnovers, and while Quinnpiac had 10.
Notes
  • Vander Weide and freshman Sarah Barcello were both named to the All-Championship Team.
  • This was Marist's 14th appearance in the MAAC championship game, all of which have occurred in the 17-year tenure of head coach Brian Giorgis. Marist is now 10-4 in MAAC title games.
  • Marist and Quinnipiac have now met in the MAAC championship game four times in the last six year. The Red Foxes won the title in 2014, while the Bobcats were victorious in 2015, 2018, and 2019.
