Softball Comes Back From Six-Run Deficit, Tops Fairleigh Dickinson

Red Foxes Go 1-1 On Second Day Of Capital Classic

DAVIS, California – The Marist softball team erased a six-run deficit in a 7-6 triumph over Fairleigh Dickinson at the Capital Classic on Saturday.
 
In their second game of the day, the Red Foxes fell to UC Davis, 6-0. Marist is now 2-2 in the Capital Classic and 7-8 on the season.

  • Fairleigh Dickinson (5-17) opened the scoring in the top of the third when Riley De Laval came home on a wild pitch.
  • The Knights added three more runs in the fifth. Madison Emerson's RBI triple scored Rylie Schmeh. Emerson then scored on a sacrifice bunt by Serena Meehan. Logan Kolehmainen then stole home, which gave Fairleigh Dickinson a 4-0 advantage.
  • The Knights ran their lead to 6-0 after five-and-a-half innings. Schmeh had an RBI double, and later scored on an error.
  • Marist then rallied with a six-run bottom of the sixth, as the Red Foxes scored all of their runs with two outs. Red-shirt junior Claire Oberdorf, who led off the inning with a double, scored on a single by freshman Hailee Jantorno. After an infield single by sophomore Olivia Knopf, sophomore Caroline Baratta and sophomore Hunter Hand followed with successive two-run doubles. Junior Ali Milam then tied the game with an RBI double of her own.
  • Senior Brandi Coon was hit by a pitch to lead off the seventh. Freshman Alyssa Yarem then sacrificed her to second. With two outs, Coon stole third, and then came home with the winning run on a throwing error.
  • Baratta finished 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs.
  • Megan Beiermeister (1-2) pitched 4.2 innings of relief for the win.
  • Schmeh went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, an RBI, a double, and a walk.
  • Marist outhit Fairleigh Dickinson, 12-4.
 
UC Davis 6, Marist 0
  • Alexis Villalobos scored the game's first run in the third on a wild pitch.
  • Thanks to four consecutive hits, UC Davis (21-5) added four runs in the fourth. Marisa Given had a two-run double in the inning.
  • Given's RBI single in the fifth closed out the scoring. She finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs, a double, and a run scored.
  • Brooke Yanez (14-1) went five shutout innings for the win with eight strikeouts.
  • The Red Foxes had three hits, with one each by Baratta, Milam, and Coon.
  • Senior Brooke Peterson (1-2) started and went the first five innings. Senior Kallen Leeseberg struck out two in the sixth.
