Softball Splits On Final Day Of Capital Classic

Phippen Improves To 6-0 As Red Foxes Top Santa Clara

SACRAMENTO, California – The Marist softball team went 1-1 on the final day of the Capital Classic on Sunday. The Red Foxes fell to Sacramento State, 9-1 in five innings, in their first game of the day, but rebounded for a 5-2 victory over Santa Clara.
 
Marist went 3-3 in its six games in the Capital Classic, and now stands at 8-9 on the season.
 
Sacramento State 9, Marist 1 (5 innings)
  • Junior Ali Milam's solo home run in the top of the first gave Marist a 1-0 lead.
  • Sacramento State (15-12) took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the second. Katie Vrentos scored on an error, and Sydney Rasmussen drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs.
  • Rasmussen scored on Krystal Aubert's two-out single in the fourth, which extended the Hornets' lead to 3-1.
  • Sacramento State closed out the game with a six-run fifth. In the inning, Nene Alas hit a three-run homer, and Suzy Brookshire's two-run homer ended the game.
  • Danielle Sperry (4-0) went all five innings with five strikeouts for Sacramento State.
 
Marist 5, Santa Clara 2
  • Milam had RBI singles in the first and third innings, which staked Marist to a 2-0 lead. In both innings, she drove home sophomore Caroline Baratta.
  • Hannah Russell's RBI single cut Marist's lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the third.
  • The Red Foxes re-claimed a two-run lead in the fifth when sophomore Hunter Hand's sacrifice fly brought home freshman Hailee Jantorno.
  • Marist added two runs in the seventh. Jantorno scored again on a sacrifice fly, this one off the bat of Milam. Red-shirt junior Claire Oberdorf followed with an RBI single, which plated Baratta.
  • Santa Clara scored once in the bottom of the seventh and brought the potential winning run to the plate with two outs, but freshman Calista Phippen induced a ground ball to end the game.
  • Baratta finished 3-for-3 with three runs scored and a stolen base, Milam was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, and Jantorno was 1-for-2 with two runs scored, a stolen base, and a walk.
  • The Red Foxes stole five bases, led by Oberdorf with two.
  • Phippen (6-0) struck out six in a complete game victory. Her streak of not allowing an earned run reached 26.1 innings before it ended in the third inning.
  • Regan Dias (5-4) pitched a complete game for Santa Clara (7-15). Both of the runs she allowed in the seventh inning were unearned.
