Nevada Takes Two From Marist Softball

Milam, Coon Hit Home Runs

RENO, Nevada – The Marist softball team (8-11) was swept in a doubleheader at Nevada (17-9) on Tuesday. The Wolf Pack prevailed by scores of 8-2 and 4-2.
 
Game One - Nevada 8, Marist 2
  • Junior Ali Milam's sacrifice fly brought home sophomore Caroline Baratta with the game's first run in the top of the first.
  • Milam's fifth homer of the season gave Marist a 2-0 lead in the third.
  • Nevada tied the game in the third on back-to-back hits by Sierra Mello (RBI triple) and Sadaria McAlister (RBI single).
  • The Wolf Pack took the lead for good with a four-run fifth. Mello and McAlister delivered back-to-back RBI triples, and Dallas Millwood hit a two-run homer.
  • Millwood's two-run double in the sixth closed out the scoring.
  • Mello, McAlister, and Millwood combined for eight of Nevada's 11 hits, and all eight of the team's RBIs.
  • Julia Jensen (7-1) pitched a complete game with five strikeouts to earn the victory.
  • Senior Megan Beiermeister (1-3) started and went four-plus innings for the Red Foxes.
 
Game Two - Nevada 4, Marist 2
  • Marist scored first on Baratta's second-inning RBI single in the top of the second, which scored senior Madison Lee.
  • Nevada tied the game in the bottom half of the frame on an RBI groundout by Haley Burda, as Ashley Salausa.
  • Salausa's two-run single was the key hit in Nevada's three-run third.
  • Senior Brandi Coon homered to lead off the sixth, which cut Nevada's lead to 4-2.
  • The Red Foxes had runners on first and second with two outs in the seventh, but were unable to score.
  • Baratta finished 3-for-4, and freshman Hailee Jantorno went 2-for-4.
  • Senior Brooke Peterson (1-3) started and went 3.1 innings. Freshman Calista Phippen struck out three in a scoreless 2.2 innings of relief.
  • Kendall Fritz (5-3) pitched a complete game with six strikeouts for the Wolf Pack. McAlister and Salausa each went 3-for-3.
