Marist Earns Split At Saint Mary’s With Game Two Shutout

Coon Homers, Phippen Blanks Gaels In Second Contest

MORAGA, California – The Marist softball team split a doubleheader at Saint Mary's on Thursday. A late home run propelled the Gaels to a 3-1 win in game one, but freshman Calista Phippen answered with a shutout in game two in the Red Foxes' 7-0 triumph.
 
Game One - Saint Mary's 3, Marist 1
  • Red-shirt junior Claire Oberdorf drew a four-pitch walk to lead off the second, and scored on a two-out single by sophomore Hunter Hand.
  • Senior Kallen Leeseberg retired 10 straight between the second and fifth innings.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, Julia McCormack's three-run homer put Saint Mary's on top for good. McCormack was the only player in the game to finish with two hits.
  • Eileen Perez pitched a four-hitter with eight strikeouts for the Gaels.
  • Leeseberg allowed just three hits in 5.1 innings, and struck out three.
 
Game Two - Marist 7, Saint Mary's 0
  • Senior Brandi Coon belted a three-run homer in the top of the first to put Marist up 3-0.
  • A two-run single by sophomore Caroline Baratta in the fifth extended the Red Foxes' lead to 5-0.
  • In the fifth, an RBI double by Hand ran Marist's lead to 6-0. The Red Foxes tacked on their final run in the sixth on a double play.
  • Phippen pitched out of bases-loaded, one-out jam in the sixth to keep the Gaels off the scoreboard. She ended with a seven-hitter in just 88 pitches. Phippen struck out two and walked only one. She is now 7-0 this season.
  • Coon finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs, a homer, and a double.
  • Seven different Red Foxes scored one run.
  • Oberdorf was hit by two pitches and stole two bases.
  • Kimiko Zapanta went 3-for-3 for Saint Mary's.

  • Marist is now 9-12 on the season.
  • Saint Mary's is 7-17.

  • Marist will continue its road trip with a doubleheader at Pacific on Friday.
