Defense Fuels Marist Men’s Lacrosse Win over Manhattan

Marist Picks Up Its Second MAAC Win

RIVERDALE, New York – Marist men's lacrosse came up on top of a defensive slugfest against Manhattan 6-5. The Red Foxes held Manhattan to one goal in the first and second quarter and scoreless in the third quarter. Marist improves to 4-3 overall and 2-0 in conference play.
 
SUMMARY
  • Marist drew first blood when Jake Weinman took a pass from Joe Tierney to score. Minutes later, Manhattan would even the score with a goal of its own. The red foxes had a pair of man up opportunities to take the lead, but were unable to utilize them and finished the quarter at 1-1.
  • Manhattan took its first lead of the day from a goal by Luke Hanson midway through the second quarter. Peyton Smith won the following face-off and Marist scored to tie the game up at 2-2. Manhattan's Brendan Krebs had 12 first half goals in an effort to lock down Marist in the first half.
  • Marist completely shut Manhattan down in the third quarter, limiting the Jaspers to just two shots. James Lyons and Jason Intermesoli scored to increase Marist's lead to 4-2 at the end of the quarter.
  • Scores from Evan Gagne and Chris Schlappich gave Marist its biggest lead of the day at 6-2 with 9:25 remaining the game. Manhattan came within one with a little over two minutes left in the game. With 11 seconds left, Manhattan's Jake Nicolosi had the opportunity to send the game to overtime, but his shot was bloked.
 
STATS
  • Marist and Manhattan were fairly even on shots (35 to 31) but Marist shot far more on goal (23 to 13)
  • Smith went 12-15 from the face-off position and had six ground balls.
  • Marist went a perfect 14-for-14 on clears.
  • JT Roselle had four ground balls and a caused turnover.
 
UP NEXT
Marist returns home to face Detroit Mercy at Tenney Stadium on March 30. Opening face-off is set for 1:00 PM.
